Six Asian gold medallists in the men’s finals of the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships

The Asian male boxers won six out of the ten finals at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Kielce, Poland in the last competition day. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan both achieved two titles in the men’s finals but India and Japan also increased the number of the Asian male gold medals. Tashkenbay, Muzafarov, Sachin, Tsutsumi, Akkalykov and Zokirov became heroes of the continent in Kielce.

Altogether 414 boxers from 52 nations are attended in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. Many of the Asian National Federations worked hard to give chances to their youth boxers to compete in the international stage again and 11 sent their talents to Kielce. Boxers who were born in 2002 and in 2003 were eligible to attend in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Kielce which was the first ever global event in Poland.

Kazakhstan’s first gold medal was achieved by Sanzhar Tashkenbay

Kazakhstan’s head coach Mr. Kairat Satzhanov selected an experienced and strong team to the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. Their boxers claimed five medals in Kielce and among these semi-finalists four joined to the title contests. Sanzhar Tashkenbay eliminated India’s ASBC Asian Junior Champion Bishwamitra Chongtham in the semi-finals of the men’s light flyweight (49kg) and met with Russia’s Robert Badalian in the final. The 17-year-old Kazakh used the best strategy against the Russian and built up strong advantage before the final round. Tashkenbay kept his Russian rival on short and his successful efforts delivered for him a gold medal and his career highlight.

Uzbekistan’s Shakhzod Muzafarov won the title of the men’s flyweight (52kg)

Uzbekistan’s Zolotarev Memorial Tournament winner and Elite National Championships silver medallist Shakhzod Muzafarov arrived to Kielce as one of the favourites for the gold medal at the men’s flyweight (52kg). He eliminated Japan’s ASBC Asian Junior Champion Daiya Kira and Ukraine’s Ruslan Tsykalo with massive performance. The Uzbek talent started better than Russia’s European Junior Champion Evgenii Zhorov and he was more active than his opponent in the final. Muzafarov proved strong performance from all fighting range and delivered Uzbekistan’s first male gold medal in Kielce.

India’s Sachin delivered the biggest sensation in the day of the finals

Kazakhstan’s Yerbolat Sabyr was too strong for Russia’s EUBC European Youth Champion Aleksey Shendrik in the semi-finals of the bantamweight (56kg) and he was the top favourite against India’s newcomer Sachin who competed only in national level in the past. The 18-year-old Indian could not maintain the best fighting distance in the first round against the experienced Kazakh. Sabyr started the second round also better but Sachin’s fighting spirit was enough to turn back their final against a technically excellent boxer.

Japan’s Reito Tsutsumi won the bout of the male finals

Japan’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion and ASBC Asian Junior Champion Reito Tsutsumi arrived to Kielce as the top favourite of the lightweight (60kg). Reito, whose elder brother Hayato was AIBA Youth World Champion and two-time ASBC Asian Youth Champion, eliminated Bulgaria’s European Youth Champion Radoslav Rosenov in the semi-finals. Tsutsumi had a powerful and technically fantastic opponent, two-time Youth National Champion Yelnur Suyunbay of Kazakhstan. Tsutsumi tried to reduce the fighting distance from the first seconds in the bout of the finals which was closer for the Japanese than expected. The final verdict was split decision in the favour of the Japanese boxer who followed the family traditions with his gold medal.

Kazakhstan’s Sabyrzhan Akkalykov is the winner of the light welterweight (64kg)

Sabyrzhan Akkalykov was Kazakhstan’s fourth finalists in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Kielce and he was named also as favourite of his category before the start of the competition. The 19-year-old Youth National Champion competed in several international events in the past and his fantastic technical skills were the difference also in the final when he met with Ukraine’s Uzbek-born Bozorboy Matyakubov. The Kazakh hope kept the distance well in the contest and his tactical dominancy delivered his nation’s second gold outstanding medal in Kielce.

Uzbekistan’s Jakhongir Zokirov won the last final by RSC

Uzbekistan’s new super heavyweight (+91kg) sensation, ASBC Asian Junior Champion Jakhongir Zokirov eliminated his main rivals as Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion Amanat Sabyrgali and Hungary’s powerful Elite National Champion Levente Kiss in the previous stages of the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. Zokirov was highly confident in the final against Armenia’s Hovhannes Papazyan and he landed the better punches. The 17-year-old Uzbek decided the final in the third round with a tough body punch and after that the US referee confirmed his RSC triumph.
