The last chance for all of the boxers is the APB/WSB Olympic Qualification Event which is holding in Vargas, Venezuela and the Asian athletes boxed from Day 2.
Qatar’s German-descent Thulasi Tharumalingam competed well enough in the AIBA Pro Boxing in the recent one year and he reached the level of the best boxers at the Light Welterweight class (64 kg) not only in Asia but also in the world. The Qatari boxer demonstrated his power and used the best tactic against Italy’s veteran Massimiliano Ballisai in his opening quarter-final bout in Vargas.
The Italian boxer returned from the professional world with such a huge experiences but Qatar’s hope did not give him any chance in the quarter-final. Tharumalingam will now meet with Argentina’s Carlos Daniel Aquino for the guaranteed place in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in the semi-finals on Thursday.
“I felt very good in the bout, I concentrated from the first round well enough. He was a tough opponent and I tried to look his faults in the tactical first round. I worked on his faults in the second round and knocked him down with a right-handed counter-attack which I launched in perfect time. I was stronger and quicker in that period and I think the most important difference between us was the timing of my punches. I am satisfied and looking forward to perform even better in my next bout,”said Qatar’s Thulasi Tharumalingam who advanced to the last four in his weight class.
