Satish Kumar proved strong stamina in the semi-finals of the Cologne Boxing World Cup

The Cologne Boxing World Cup is one of the last highlights of the boxing events this year which saw the semi-finals in Köln, Germany. Among the best Asian teams, the Indians are attending in the strong international competition in the city of Köln where several of their starts advanced to the finals.

Five women and eight men Indian boxers were registered to the Cologne Boxing World Cup following their strong preparations. Germany’s top international event has been re-scheduled twice this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and postponed finally from October to December. The name of the event was known as Chemistry Cup in the previous decades and has got the tradition and bright boxing history with many stars on the board.

The best six elite female and ten male Indian boxers are attending in European training camps and events until to prepare well to the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which is scheduled to be held in June 2021. India qualified already nine boxers including four girls to the Tokyo Olympic Games through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which was held in Amman, Jordan on March 2020.

India’s Simranjit Kaur Baath was bronze medallist in the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and following she moved down to the lightweight (60kg), she qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The 25-year-old Indian faced with Ukraine’s new national team member Marianna Basanets and she looked nervous in the first round. Kaur changed her rhythm and speed of her attacks in the beginning of the second round and defeated the European opponent in the afternoon session.

India arrived to the Cologne Boxing World Cup at the women’s featherweight (57kg) with three boxers who are aiming for a place in the national team at the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Sonia Lather Singh tried to control her bout against Manisha Moun from the first seconds and she looked better in the exchanges in the opening minutes. Manisha Moun stepped into the gas from the second and her counter-attacks were enough to beat her national rival.

Two-time AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Sakshi Choudhary represented India at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event but she could not qualify for Tokyo yet. The 20-year-old talent is India’s third boxer at the women’s featherweight (57kg) in the Cologne Boxing World Cup who met with Germany’s Ramona Graeff on Day2. Sakshi used her fantastic tempo in the bout and eliminated her German opponent which means she can meet in the final with Manisha Moun.

Commonwealth Games winner Gaurav Solanki started his semi-final with a virtuoso style of boxing and used excellent rhythm against France’s Tokyo Olympian Samuel Kistohurry. His European opponent received strong advices in the ringside after the first break and the French boxer was able to turn back their top featherweight (57kg) fight. India’s second boxer in this men’s weight category, Mohamed Hussamuddin also bagged bronze medal following his loss to Germany’s No.1 Hamsat Shadalov.

Satish Kumar achieved bronze medal at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman and qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The 31-year-old Indian super heavyweight (+91kg) boxer was not only brave in the attacks against France’s EUBC European Boxing Championships bronze medallist Djamili Dini Aboudou Moindze but he landed several punches. Kumar had the strong fighting spirit until the end of their semi-final and advanced to the final of the Cologne Boxing World Cup. The Indian boxer will be fighting for the gold medal with Germany’s European Games bronze medallist 21-year-old Nelvie Tiafack.
