Saparamadu and Hansika were the best boxers in the 73rd edition of the Layton Cup in Sri Lanka

The Layton Cup for the elite women and men boxers was held in Colombo which is the busy capital city of Sri Lanka. The Royal MAS Arena was the venue of the Layton Cup this time where the country’s best female and male elite boxers met each other to fight for the medals and prizes.
The Layton Cup has got great history in Sri Lanka’s boxing life and the new 73rd edition delivered amazing bouts in the 20 weight classes. In the men’s competition Army claimed three gold medals while Navy bagged two titles in the Layton Cup. In the women’s competition proud sponsor of Sri Lankan boxing Hela Holdings, Police, Air Force and Army won one gold medal.
The first gold medal among the men boxers was achieved by Thiwanka Sandaruwan Ranasinghe at the light flyweight (49kg) where he had to defeat two national team member boxers such as M.P.G. Sanjeeva Nuwan in the semi-final and A.M.G.I. Bandara in the final. Muthukurage Prabashwara, who competed in the 2013 ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships, proved his best in his new flyweight (52kg) and achieved the next title.
Sri Lanka’s best lightweight (60kg) boxer Naiduralage Gayan Sanjeeva Jayaweera continued his amazing winning path in the national events and secured another title. He walked over in the semi-final against experienced Dilanka Suresh Pattiarachchi and controlled his final fight against Vimukthi Kumara.
Slimline’s Dinidu Saparamadu competed in the South Asian Games in Shillong, India on February and only the host nation’s Manoj Kumar was able to defeat him in the final of the light welterweight (64kg). The silver medallist from the regional multisport event dominated all of his contests in the Layton Cup and became the best male boxer in Colombo. He boxed well also in several international tournaments since 2014 and has got great chance to win international contests also in 2017.
One of the best Sri Lankan male boxer Sisira Kumarasinghe, who have got also great experiences from the international level, had to do his very best in the final to win the Layton Cup. The 31-year-old welterweight (69kg) boxer had only a close triumph in the gold medal bout against his younger rival, Dinesh Pathirage Maduranga.
Kosala Nilmini is Sri Lanka’s top female light flyweight (48kg) boxer who replaced their veteran Anusha Kodituwakku also in the national team. The strong Nilmini was amazing in the final against another top rival Kaluhath Erandi Gimhani De Silva who competed in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Astana and won her opening contest.
AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships competitor Dulani Anuradha Jayasinghe won the Olympic flyweight (51kg) in the Layton Cup where she was too strong for K.K.I.T. Perera in the final. Three Nations Women’s Meeting winner Muthuthanthri Sajeewani Cooray defended her throne in the Layton Cup following her triumph over S.V.P.R. Dilhani in the final of the bantamweight (54kg).
Kasthuri Arachchige Keshani Hansika competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, at the 2015 ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships in Wulanchabu, China and at the 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Astana therefore she is one of the most experienced woman boxer in Sri Lanka. The 25-year-old lightweight (60kg) boxer dominated all of her contests in the Layton Cup.
Sri Lanka’s next competition will be their National Elite Championships in December where their top female and male boxers will be meeting again.
