Ramisha Shrestha and South Asian Games winner Sanil Shahi were the stars in the Bagmati Province Championships in Nepal

Nepal’s Nagarjun Boxing Sports Committee was the host of the Bir Ganeshman Singh Bagmati Province Boxing Championships from March 3 until the 6th in Nagarjun, Kathmandu. Nepal’s South Asian Games winner strong Sanil Shahi and one of their top female talents, Ramisha Shrestha won the gold medals in the Bagmati Province Boxing Championships.

The six-days long Bagmati Provincial Boxing Championships was held for the elite women and men boxers. Bagmati is one of the seven provinces of Nepal which established by the constitution of the country in 2015. All of the 13 districts of the Bagmati Province have been invited to attend in the event which was a cash money prize competition. All of the gold, silver and bronze medallists earned money prizes from the local organizers.

The women boxers can attend in six different weight categories while the men part of the Bagmati Provincial Boxing Championships is scheduled in eight divisions. The women’s weight categories were the light flyweight (48kg), flyweight (51kg), bantamweight (54kg), featherweight (57kg), lightweight (60kg) and light welterweight (64kg).

The men’s event was held at the light flyweight (49kg), flyweight (52kg), bantamweight (56kg), lightweight (60kg), light welterweight (64kg), welterweight (69kg), middleweight (75kg) and light heavyweight (81kg). Altogether 38 female and 119 male contests took place in the Bagmati Province Boxing Championships.

Ramisha Shrestha is a 20-year-old female talent in Nepal who met with her main national rival in the final of the light flyweight (48kg). Shrestha used her impressive footwork to beat Sushma Tamang in the final which was the best woman contest of the whole Bagmati Provincial Boxing Championships.

The second gold medal in the women’s competition was taken by Roshani Rai who defeated Harina Air in the final of the flyweight (51kg). All of the women finals delivered results of unanimous decisions in Nagarjun where Mandira Putuwar (54kg), Dolma Tamang (57kg), Dechen Sherpa (60kg) and Hema Rai (64kg) won the remaining weight categories.

The light flyweight (49kg) is always strong in Nepal which was won by Mohan Gurung following his success over experienced Dharmendra Rai. Suman Nepali was too strong for Wangdi Sherpa in the final of the flyweight (52kg) which looked also a great category in the event. Buddha Gyamjo Lama (56kg) and Ganesh Thapa (60kg) both won their weight classes by split decision over strong opponents.

Sanil Shahi claimed gold medal at the South Asian Games and he competed also at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman one year ago. He returned in strong condition and his opponent, Ashwin Dev Shrestha was unable to stop his powerful attacks and his ringside abandoned the final contest at the light welterweight (64kg).
