Priyadarshani and Dharmasena are the most scientific boxers at the 97th Sri Lankan National Championships

Hanwellage Sanduni Priyadarshani and R.M.P. Dharmasena were the most scientific female and male boxers at the 97th edition of the Sri Lankan National Championships which was held at the ocean-side urban park, Galle Face Green in Colombo.

There were neutral Referees & Judges in the 97th Sri Lankan National Championships from South Korea, Ireland, Indonesia and Kazakhstan to arrange the fair play in the competition.

The Sri Lankan National Championships were organised by the Tri Forces and Police and endorsed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau, promises to be more than just a competition, it is a celebration of sports tourism and a further step to promote boxing in the island.

Vidyarathna Sports Club’s ASBC Asian Boxing Championships competitor R.A. Nadeeka Pushpakumari was unstoppable once again at the women’s minimumweight (48kg) and she defeated H.K.N.N. Perera in the final.

K.K. Ishara Thushari Perera represented Sri Lanka at the recent ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai but she lost to S.H.S.R. Fernando at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) once again on their repeat contest.

Army’s Hanwellage Sanduni Priyadarshani had a massive advantage on the scorecards against S.H.Y.R. Fernando after two rounds and she finished the job in the third at the women’s flyweight (52kg) final.

The Seed No.1 at the men’s minimumweight (48kg), D.H. Thisararachchi met a well-known opponent, H.M.L.P. Jayawardhana in a repeat final. After two close rounds, Thisararachchi turned up the heat in the third and his strength decided the final contest.

The Asian Championships bronze medallist Umayanga Mihiran advanced to the finals of the men’s flyweight (51kg) easily and he could expect a hard battle against K.A.S.K. Abeygunawardana. He had a short advantage after the first round but he was disqualified in the second due to hitting the opponent on the back of his head when he was down.

The surprise boxer of the men’s bantamweight (54kg), G.J.K.R.J. Kumara eliminated two experienced opponents during his road to the final. He had a tight advantage in the final against R.M.P. Dharmasena after two rounds but his rival knocked him out in the third.

Sri Lanka’s next top boxer, the Commonwealth Games quarter-finalist Rukmal Prasanna walked over to the titles of the featherweight (57kg), following his opponent, N.B.A.S.N. Kumara was unable to box against him in the last day.

R.M.P.K.K. Rasnayaka impressed at the recent Clifford Cup one month ago and he repeated that strong performance against E.W.A. Sadaruwan for the title of the men’s lightweight (60kg) in Colombo. K.G. Pathmasiri (67kg) and P.M.L.L. Chandrabandara (71kg) both won their final contests on the fourth competition day.

Yazmin Usaith is the youngest boxer in the Sri Lankan national pool and the 20-year-old boxer from the St. Sylvester’s College impressed once again. The youngster had great footwork in the final of the middleweight (75kg) against Y.S.P. Sudamma which guaranteed the national title for the Kandy-based boxer.

The PEO Sports was the official broadcaster of the 97th Sri Lankan National Boxing Championships as in the last Clifford Cup.
