Thirteen weight categories, 248 top boxers, 124 female and 124 male athletes from 69 nations will compete in the boxing event of the Paris Olympics.
Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Thailand, China, Chinese Taipei, India, the Philippines, Tajikistan, Jordan, Mongolia, South Korea, DPR Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan and Palestine will have boxers in the Olympic Games from the Asian continent.
The full Chinese female team has qualified for the Paris Olympics and their Asian Games winner Chang Yuan has the experience to reach a new highlight in this event. The Chinese bantamweight (54kg) boxer was too smart and experienced for Ireland’s Jennifer Lehane and she joined the last four.
Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova claimed a gold medal at the 2021 Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Dubai at the age of 19 but she had to do her very best against DR Congo’s Marcelat Sakobi Matshu. The Uzbek featherweight (57kg) boxer needed a superb second round and a full concentration in the third to win this contest.
Kazakhstan’s Nurbek Oralbay, the defending World Champion at the light heavyweight (80kg), worked hard in his Round of 16 contest against Australia’s Callum Peters today. Oralbay had a few difficulties in the second round but due to his great finish, he could eliminate his Aussie opponent in Paris.
DPR Korea qualified two female boxers for the Paris Olympics and their No.1 Pang Chol Mi is a sensational athlete at the women’s bantamweight (54kg). The former World Champion used her long-distance tactics against Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova in the first round and she was able to keep the top level of boxing until the very end of the fight.
Mongolia’s World bronze medallist Enkhjargal Munguntsetseg met a big puncher, Romania’s European Champion Lacramioara Perijoc but as in all of her previous contests, she was better minute by minute in their bantamweight (54kg) meeting. The Mongolian caught the Romanian with several combinations in the third round and she joined the quarter-finals of this weight class.
Philippines’ Nesthy Petecio was silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics and she carried her country’s flag in the Opening Ceremony. The Filipina had stronger punches than India’s Jaismine Lamboriya and she had the advantage on the judges’ scorecards after three minutes. The Indian tried to use her longer reach better but Petecio had the speed and the strength to beat the younger opponent.
Kazakhstan’s Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Saken Bibossynov maintained the best fighting distance successfully against Turkey’s European Champion Samet Gumus and he controlled their Round of 16 contest. The Kazakh will now meet in a key quarter-final Uzbekistan’s Rio 2016 Olympic Champion Hasanboy Dusmatov who eliminated the youngest boxer in the entire Games, Puerto Rico’s Juanma Lopez.
Philippines’ Eumir Felix Marcial was bronze medallist in the Tokyo Olympics but he was not able to repeat his opponent’s rhythm today. The Youth World Champion Turabek Khabibullayev from Uzbekistan had the enthusiasm and the impressive rhythm to win their excellent light heavyweight (80kg) contest.
South Korea’s Im Ae Ji also secured her place in the last eight following her success over Brazil’s veteran Tatiana Chagas which was her nation’s first boxing success in Paris. Xu Zichun of China exceeded all of the previous expectations and she eliminated one of the gold medal contenders, Italy’s Irma Testa at the featherweight (57kg).
