Philippines and Indonesia are among the guaranteed medallist nations at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships

The second competition day featured 25 contests in the ASBC Asian Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships. The venue of the continental event is the Grand Ballroom of the Le Meridien Hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Philippines’ new young talents and Indonesia’s Huswatun Hasanah are among the winners and guaranteed medallists of the second competition day.

The number of the boxers is 150 including 47 women from 17 different nations in the ASBC Asian Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships. The following 17 nations are attending in the ASBC Asian Men’s & Women’s Elite Boxing Championships: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Indonesia, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Laos, Mongolia, Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan.

Boxers at the men’s light flyweight (49kg), flyweight (52kg), bantamweight (56kg), lightweight (60kg), light welterweight (64kg), welterweight (69kg), middleweight (75kg), light heavyweight (81kg), heavyweight (91kg) and super heavyweight (+91kg) competed in the preliminaries of Day1. Mr. Walid Jarrar of Jordan is the Technical Delegate of the ASBC Asian Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships.

Mongolia’s Unubold Orkhontungalag is the first medallist of the championship while Mirzakhmedov also joined to the last four

Mongolia’s Unubold Orkhontungalag is a newcomer in the Mongolian national team but he defeated Sri Lanka’s Sajeewa Nuwan in the first preliminary round of the light flyweight (49kg). The Mongolian had to compete in the second competition day against Kyrgyzstan’s veteran Mirlan Turkbay Uulu who claimed bronze in the last edition. The Kyrgyz boxer was smaller than his Mongolian opponent but he was not able to keep the distance well in the first round. Turkbay Uulu turned up the heat in the second but his efforts were not enough to turn back their contest in Dubai. Unubold will be facing for the final place with Uzbekistan’s defending ASBC Asian Champion Nodirjon Mirzakhmedov.

“The return to a big championship takes lot of preparations and I developed also my strength before Dubai. I feel I am ready for the challenges in the event. My objectives are evident, I want to defend my Asian throne,” said Uzbekistan’s reigning gold medallist Nodirjon Mirzakhmedov.

Kazakhstan’s and Philippines’ youngsters are semi-finalists at the light flyweight (49kg)

Kazakhstan’s Daniyal Sabit won the light flyweight (49kg) in their National Championships short after his 18th birthday last November. The Kazakh teenager was nervous in the first round against Indonesia’s veteran Kornelis Kwangu Langu but he turned back that contest and advanced to the semi-finals. Philippines’ Mark Lester Durens is only 20 but he won several national and regional events in the recent years. He never boxed out of the Philippines yet but he spent a short time in the ring against Kuwait’s Mansour Khalefah in Dubai when the referee confirmed Lester’s RSC success. 

Uzbekistan’s Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov eliminated his main rival in the quarter-finals

Uzbekistan’s defending AIBA World Champion, Asian Games winner and ASBC Asian Champion Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov kept his focus 100% until the end of his contest against India’s Mohammed Hussamuddin. The Uzbek bantamweight (56kg) star was stronger and he landed the better punches in their close contest. Mirzakhalilov advanced to the semi-finals of the category and Philippines’ Junmilardo Ogayre, Kyrgyzstan’s strong Akylbek Esenbek Uulu and Mongolia’s veteran Olympian Enkh-Amar Kharkhuu followed him to the last four. The Mongolian had to do his very best against Afghanistan’s 20-year-old Hasibullah Malikzadah who had excellent punches in the event.

Tajikistan’s Bakhodur Usmonov demonstrated his physical skills on Day2

Tajikistan’s Bakhodur Usmonov is the reigning ASBC Asian Elite Champion at the light welterweight (64kg) who qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The 23-year-old Tajik used the recent one year to strengthen his physical skills and he showed it in the quarter-finals against Philippines’ newcomer John Paul Panuayan. Usmonov started in confident style in the first round against the younger Filipino and he knocked down the Southeast Asian in the second round. Shiva Thapa is five-times medallist while Abduraimov and Chinzorig are also semi-finalists at the light welterweight (64kg)

India’s Shiva Thapa claimed medals in the recent four editions and he bagged his fifth podium place at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships following his success over Kuwait’s most experienced boxer, Nader Obah. AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Elnur Abduraimov started with a quick knockdown against Afghanistan’s Sultan Mohammad Naeemi but his opponent returned to the contest therefore the Uzbek had to do his very best in their quarter-final. The fourth semi-finalists in this tough category is Mongolia’s Chinzorig Baatarsukh who bowed out Kazakhstan’s veteran Zakir Safiullin in Dubai.

The fourth guaranteed medal of the heavyweight (91kg) was achieved by India’s Sanjeet who defeated Tajikistan’s returning boxer, Jasurbek Qurbonov in an exciting quarter-final.

Uzbekistan and Mongolia claimed the first medals in women’s boxing

Uzbekistan’s Gulasal Sultonalieva competed in the recent two editions of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships therefore she was too experienced for Sri Lanka’s Rasmika Ilangarathna in the first female contest of the whole competition. The final verdict was unanimous decision in the favour of the 22-year-old Uzbek who advanced to the semi-finals of the light flyweight (48kg). Mongolia’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg was too strong for Tajikistan’s Sumaiya Kosimova at the flyweight (51kg) and claimed her nation’s next medal in Dubai.

India’s youngsters as Sakshi Choudhary and Jaismine are medallists in Dubai

India’s two-time AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Sakshi Choudhary moved down to the bantamweight (54kg) which is perfect category for her height and physical skills. The 21-year-old Indian overcame Tajikistan’s newcomer Rukhafzo Khaknazarova in the actions and her strength decided the quarter-final. Indonesia’s Huswatun Hasanah claimed bronze medal at the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games at the age of 20. The Indonesian lightweight (60kg) boxer proved amazing developments already in the first round of her quarter-final against Philippines’ Maricel De La Torre.
