Palicte, Wongsuwan advance to medal rounds in SEA Games

Veteran boxers James Palicte of the Philippines and Somchay Wongsuwan of Thailand barged into the semifinals of men’s lightweight (63kg) division in the 31st Southeast Asian Games being held in Hanoi, Vietnam.

SEA Games 2019 gold medalist Palicte made short work of his Cambodian foe Davit Touch, knocking him out just in the first round for the first KO victory in this year’s regional meet.

On the other hand, the AIBA World Championships 2021 quarterfinalist Wongsuwan had a harder time against Elisio Raimundo Gaio of Timor Leste but the 26-year-old Thai still managed to pull off a 5-0 win.

Indonesia’s Farrand Papendang and Malaysia’s Mohamad Akram Bin Rasit also entered the medal rounds in the same weight class.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Thai bet Thanarat Saengphet dominated Yothin Sengmany of Laos in the quarterfinals of flyweight (52kg) category and he could face next the reigning SEA Games king Rogen Ladon of the Philippines, who beat him in the Thailand Open last month.

Tran Van Thao of Vietnam overwhelmed Kornelis Kwangu Langu of Indonesia to also advance to the flyweight semis where he will meet Myanmar’s Lin Htut Paing who defeated Cambodia’s Nov Sokty.
