Paalam and Khalokov were the bests of the session in the Asian Games

One female and nine male contests took place in the fifth session of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. Philippines’ Carlo Paalam eliminated an Asian Champion while Uzbekistan’s star Abdumalik Khalokov impressed in his opener as well.
Thailand’s Baison Manikon won the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships in Bangkok this January and she has five years of international experience. The Tokyo Olympian talent used her longer hands to keep Uzbekistan’s Aziza Zokirova on long and her tactics worked well from the opening exchanges. The 19-year-old Uzbek is a top talent at the women’s middleweight (75kg) but she was not able to handle Manikon’s height advantage today.
Philippines’ Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Carlo Paalam moved up to the featherweight (57kg) just before the start of the Asian Games which was a surprise decision. The energetic Filipino was small in comparison to Jordan’s Mohammad Adnan Abu Jajeh but he used aggressive style of boxing in this meeting. Abu Jajeh was gold medallist at the lightweight (60kg) in the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships one year ago but Paalam’s rhythm was too strong for him.
Uzbekistan’s World Champion and ASBC Asian Champion Abdumalik Khalokov had an amazing performance in his opener against Chinese Taipei’s Lee Cheng Wei at the men’s featherweight (57kg). The 23-year-old Uzbek controlled the contest from the first seconds, his technical skills dominated this preliminary bout.
India’s 2021 Youth World Champion Sachin had a promising opponent, Indonesia’s Southeast Asian Games silver medallist Asri Udin but he managed to win that contest with his speed today. Kuwait’s first boxer who succeeded in the Asian Games was Turki Abuquthailah who had a very difficult and close contest against Afghanistan’s Mohammad Edriss Jafari at the featherweight (57kg).
China’s former Youth Olympian Liu Ping had a hard battle against Iran’s World Championships bronze medallist Daniyal Shakhbakhsh in this session. The 27-year-old Chinese boxer had the best strategy against the counter-attacking Iranian and he joined the Round of 16 in Hangzhou. Pakistan’s new national team member Muhammad Qasim dominated his contest over United Arab Emirates’ Nawwaf Al-Zahmi and he also managed to reach the next round.
Bahrain’s Denis Latypov walked over to the quarter-finals at the super heavyweight (+92kg) as his three-time ASBC Asian bronze medallist opponent, Mohammad Moulayes of Syria was unable to box today. Iran’s Iman Ramezanpour was too strong for South Korea’s Ju Tae Ung in the first round and he took the massive lead on the judges’ scorecards. Ju received three warnings until the middle of the second round and the Iranian super heavyweight boxer advanced to the last eight.
