Nuryagdyyev, Odayev shine in Turkmenistan elite joust

ASBC Asian medalists Nuryagdy Nuryagdyyev and Saparmyrat Odayev proved that they are a cut above the rest in the Turkmenistan Elite National Championships 2022 held recently in Mary.

Nuryagdyyev, who won silver in the Asian Youth Championships Pavlodar 2016 and bronze in the Asian Elite Championships Tashkent 2017, breezed through all his opponents in the light heavyweight (80kg) division.

The Asian Youth Championships Bangkok 2018 silver finisher Odayev, for his part, moved up to the welterweight (67kg) class and seized his new national title.

Meanwhile, Muhammetmyrat Sahedov emerged victorious in a hard-fought light middleweight (71kg) final against fellow Asian Elite Championships Amman 2022 quarterfinalist Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov.

World Championships 2019 competitor Yhlas Gylychjanov dominated in featherweight (57kg) even as top female pug Maisa Valiyeva reigned in women’s lightweight (60kg).

Ashgabat’s Sayitjan Babajanov was the most experienced boxer at the flyweight (51kg) who controlled his contests against his younger rivals.

Shukur Ovezov earned several national titles as a schoolboy, junior and youth boxer and he is now Turkmenistan’s best lightweight (60kg) hope after beating the experienced Shokhrat Jumayev in the final.

Zakir Rejepov represented Turkmenistan in the FISU University Boxing World Cup and other international events in 2022. The young light welterweight (63.5kg) boxer used the opportunity to win the national title in the absence of the Asian Games quarter-finalist No.1, Hursand Imankuliyev.

Rasul Yuldashev is a veteran boxer who competed as a cadet boxer for Turkmenistan already in 2003 and returned to the top of the podium at the heavyweight (92kg) in Mary following his success over the 2019 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships competitor, Shatlyk Saryyev.

Baky Toychyyev joined the elite national team in 2017 and his skills were enough to win the super heavyweight (+92kg) once again.

Several young boxers joined the national tourney in preparation for the ASBC Asian U22 Championships 2023 next month in Bangkok.
