Nearly 50% of all medals earned by the Asian boxers at the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships

The winners of the tenth day of boxing are guaranteed medallists at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Out of the 64 quarter-finalists, more than 35%, 23 boxers were Asians from eight different nations. Among the 23 quarter-finalists, 15 Asians succeeded in the tenth competition day which means nearly 50% of all medals earned by boxers from our continent.
Kazakhstan topped the medal rankings with six guaranteed medals, Uzbekistan earned five semi-final places and became second. Russia, Cuba and England proved also strong performance but Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are ahead of them in this competition. India, Philippines and Mongolia are the further nations in Asia which have semi-finalists in the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships.
Altogether 107 Asian elite male boxers are attending in the event from 21 nations: Afghanistan, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Philippines, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan.
The first guaranteed Asian medal was achieved by a Kazakh boxer at the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Their new 22-year-old flyweight (52kg) sensation Saken Bibossynov, who eliminated a seeded athlete Colombia’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games silver medallist Yuberjen Martinez in the last 16, impressed once again. Bibossynov kept the safest fighting distance against Armenia’s European Games winner Artur Hovhannisyan in their quarter-final. The taller Kazakh landed jabs to stop the aggressive Armenian and that strategy worked well in their meeting.
India’s Jakarta 2018 Asian Games winner and ASBC Asian Champion Amit Panghal and his opponent Philippines’ Carlo Paalam both moved up to the flyweight (52kg) this year. The Indian has done this change earlier and he looked fresh in the first round landing nice shots from quick attacks. The Filipino increased his tempo and surprised Amit Panghal with his excellent technique in the next phase of their quarter-final. The Indian worked well in the third and eliminated his younger Filipino rival achieving a guaranteed bronze medal.
Uzbekistan’s Asian Games winner and ASBC Asian Champion Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov knew his Kazakh opponent well enough from previous competitions and eliminated Kairat Yeraliyev who was the defending champion at the bantamweight (57kg). Another strong Uzbek Bobo-Usmon Baturov, who has the same Asian results from the previous one and half year as Mirzakhalilov, controlled all of the rounds against Jordan’s young sensation Zeyad Eshaish and advanced to the semi-finals of the welterweight (69kg).
Kazakhstan’s AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Ablaikhan Zhussupov eliminated Thailand’s Wuttichai Masuk still in the last 32 and continued his winning path with strong performance against Dominican Republic’s Rohan Polanco at the welterweight (69kg). His ASBC Asian Champion compatriot Tursynbai Kulakhmet used his footwork to avoid Armenia’s Arman Darchinyan’s punches
Philippines’ Eumir Felix Marcial joined to the quarter-finals of the middleweight (75kg) on Day8 and he had enough relaxation time to show his very best once again. The 24-year-old former AIBA Junior World Champion tried to keep Iran’s Seyed Shahin Mousavi long and worked with quick attacks with perfect timing. The Iranian boxer reduced the fighting range a few times but Marcial landed the clean punches which means the Filipino is now a guaranteed medallist in Yekaterinburg reaching his career highlight.
Kazakhstan’s Kamshybek Kunkabayev is the Seed No.1 at the super heavyweight (+91kg) therefore he was confident against Germany’s 20-year-old Nelvie Raman Hess Tiafack winning all of the rounds in each scorecard. Uzbekistan’s two-time ASBC Asian Champion Bakhodir Jalolov expected a hard battle against United States’ No.1 Richard Torrez but he spent less than one round in the ring. The 25-year-old Uzbek landed a lethal punch in the first round and won their quarter-final by a brutal knock out.
