Ms. Shelly Selowati Soejono – These Indonesian boxing medals were our first ones in the Asian Games since 1998

The 18th edition of the Asian Games is officially closed with its Closing Ceremony in Jakarta where the 465 gold medals found their owners. The boxing tournament of the Asian Games finished in the last competition day of the event where the host country claimed two bronze medals in our sport.
We have asked Indonesia’s boxing official Ms. Shelly Selowati Soejono who is a well-known Supervisor in the international stages about the Asian Games and Indonesia’s performance in the boxing event.
“The level of the boxing event of the Asian Games was the highest I have seen in my life, it was really hard to get medals for the top boxers as well.
The lack of coordination between INASGOC and Indonesian Boxing Federation internally caused several issues. We were facing for a lot of problems before the start of the Asian Games and I hope none of the teams realized our issues which we tried to fix during this important event.
The atmosphere was great in the venue, the crowd could follow world class bouts in the hall and the highest boxing level which event ever held in Indonesia. Following our hard work luckily everyone was pleased, appreciated and gave thumbs up to us and after those nice feedbacks we are satisfied with the organization.
The medal ceremonies were the most epic moments for me in the Asian Games, it was amazing to see Indonesians are in the podium this time. We were waiting for these moments so long and accomplished our targets.
My favourite boxer is South Korea’s woman No.1 Oh Yeon Ji who won the lightweight (60kg) after her two ASBC Asian titles. She will be turning to 28 but she is still in top form and her personality is also great so I liked her style and performance in Jakarta.
The Indonesian team proved excellent performance but to be honest as we all knew other squads were better in the Asian Games. In relation of the Indonesian boxing team my personal target was a bronze medal at least and we could double it in the event. I know the other nations’ strength therefore it was a realistic goal for us.
We have done our mission successfully in Jakarta and these medals were our first ones since the 1998 Asian Games. The athletes are our strength, they worked hard for this success and their medals keep me staying in Indonesia’s boxing,”
said Ms. Shelly Selowati Soejono after the Closing Ceremony of the Asian Games.
