Manisha Moun, Simranjit Kaur and Amit Panghal earned three gold medals for India at the Cologne Boxing World Cup

The Cologne Boxing World Cup was one of the last highlights of the boxing events this year which delivered fantastic finals in Köln, Germany. Among the best Asian teams, the Indians attended in the strong international competition in the city of Köln and bagged three gold medals. Amit Panghal, Manisha Moun and Simranjit Kaur earned gold medals for India in the last step of their European tour.

Five women and eight men Indian boxers were registered to the Cologne Boxing World Cup following their strong preparations. Germany’s top international event has been re-scheduled twice this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and postponed finally from October to December. The name of the event was known as Chemistry Cup in the previous decades and has got the tradition and bright boxing history with many stars on the board.

The best six elite female and ten male Indian boxers are attending in European training camps and events until to prepare well to the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which is scheduled to be held in June 2021. India qualified already nine boxers including four girls to the Tokyo Olympic Games through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which was held in Amman, Jordan on March 2020.

India sent three boxers at the women’s featherweight (57kg) to the Cologne Boxing World Cup and among them Manisha Moun and two-time AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Sakshi Choudhary advanced to the finals. The younger Sakshi tried to land quick punches and overcome one of her national rivals in the first round of the final. Manisha moved more on feet from the second round and defeated her younger rival which was an important success for her before the year of 2021.

India’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Simranjit Kaur Baath found her best category, the lightweight (60kg) is perfect for her height and physical skills. The 25-year-old Indian impressed in the semi-finals and had to meet with Germany’s Maya Kleinhans in the title bout. Kaur’s footwork was much better than her German opponent’s movements and landed also nice punches. The Indian boxer reduced the fighting distance successfully against the taller opponent and won the bout by split decision taking the next gold medal for her proud nation. Jakarta 2018 Asian Games winner and Bangkok 2019 ASBC Asian Champion Amit Panghal won the Round Robin competition at the men’s flyweight (52kg) in Cologne. The 25-year-old Indian defeated one of his main rivals, France’s AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Billal Bennama still in the first day of boxing which was a big scalp for him. India’s super heavyweight (+91kg) boxer Satish Kumar had an emotional success in the semi-finals but he was not able to compete in the final therefore he claimed silver medal in Cologne.
