The second parts of the semi-finals were held in the seventh competition day at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Hamburg where 10 bouts were in the official program. Two Uzbeks such as Jasurbek Latipov, Shakhram Giyasov and a Kazakh boxer Kamshybek Kunkabayev advanced to the finals of the competition.
Asia had 15 semi-finalists in the Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships and among our hopes 7 were able to go through to the finals in Germany. Uzbekistan will have four while Kazakhstan three chances to get titles in the gold medal bouts which will be held tomorrow in Hamburg.

Flyweight (52kg):
Uzbekistan’s AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Jasurbek Latipov arrived to Hamburg as ASBC Asian Champion. He eliminated Puerto Rico’s 20-year-old Yankiel Rivera, Bulgaria’s two-time EUBC European Champion Daniel Asenov and Colombia’s Ceiber David Avila in his previous three contests in Germany. The 26-year-old experienced Uzbek, who regained his place in the national top team this year, had to meet in the last four with South Korea’s Kim In Kyu which was the repeat match of the final of the Tashkent 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships. The Uzbek boxer had a few difficulties in the first round but he changed his tempo in the second and his aggressive style delivered for him a place in the final.

Lightweight (60kg):
Mongolia’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games bronze medallist and Asian Games winner Otgondalai Dorjnyambuu was seeded in Hamburg and after his strong preparation he dreamed about the gold medal. The Mongolian eliminated Israel’s former EUBC European Champion Pavlo Ishchenko and Venezuela’s Luis Cabrera in the recent two rounds and met with France’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games silver medallist Sofiane Oumiha in the semi-final. The Mongolian did better performance than in the quarter-final but his French opponent’s counter-attacks were successful therefore Dorjnyambuu claimed bronze medal once again.

Welterweight (69kg):
Uzbekistan’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games silver medallist Shakhram Giyasov was seeded No.1 in Hamburg but he had such a hard road to the semi-finals in Hamburg. The 24-year-old defending ASBC Asian Champion triumphed over Ukraine’s Ievgenii Barabanov and England’s EUBC European Confederation Boxing Championships silver medallist Pat McCormack in the previous days. Giyasov ruled the middle of the ring in the semi-final against Kazakhstan’s Ablaikhan Zhussupov which was the repeat match of the gold medal bout of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships. Zhussupov had to go to the medical corner in the second round and Giyasov did enough to win his key semi-final.

Light heavyweight (81kg):
Uzbekistan’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games silver medallist Bektemir Melikuziev opened his campaign in the Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships only in the fourth competition day since then he eliminated Russia’s EUBC European Confederation Boxing Championships silver medallist Muslim Gadzhimagomedov and Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships Silver medallist Yerik Alzhanov. The 21-year-old Uzbek met in the semi-final with Ireland’s three-time EUBC European Champion Joseph Ward which was another strong opponent for him in Hamburg. Melikuziev tried to reduce the fighting distance from the first seconds against his taller rival but finally Ward’s hand was raised in the end of the contest.

Super heavyweight (+91kg):
Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships bronze medallist Kamshybek Kunkabayev is a strong boxer in this weight class which he proved in the AOB and WSB events previously. The 27-year-old Kazakh boxer eliminated Germany’s Max Keller with top performance and did a classical revenge against defending ASBC Asian Champion, Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan in the quarter-final. The Kazakh boxer used his experiences against Cameroon’s Arsene Fokou in the semi-final and after one of his strong punch the referee counted the African in the second round. Kunkabayev was excellent in the whole contest and advanced to the final of the event.
