Kazakhstan’s AIBA World Champion and Incheon 2014 Asian Games winner Daniyar Yeleussinov was the Best Boxer of the World in 2013 and also in 2014 therefore he was the favourite against Great Britain’s Baku 2015 European Games bronze medallist Joshua Kelly in his debuting match in Rio de Janeiro. The 25-year-old Kazakh boxer dominated all of the rounds against Kelly and advanced to the last eight in his second Olympic Games. Yeleussinov will be boxing for the guaranteed medal with Venezuela’s AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Gabriel Maestre.
We asked him about his thoughts after his first contest in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games:
“I wanted to outbox my first opponent, worked from longer distance to beat Joshua Kelly in the preliminary round. I felt I was faster in the contest but my British opponent was also a well-prepared fighter and his speed was also good enough. I am happy that I could win my first contest in my second Olympic Games. The atmosphere is amazing in the hall and the feeling was incredible when I stepped into the ring, said Kazakhstan’s gold medal favourite Daniyar Yeleussinov after his first contest.
