Kazakhstan’s Tokyo Olympian Serik Temirzhanov – Everything went according to our plans in the Qualifiers

Kazakhstan’s Serik Temirzhanov was a new addition to their national elite team this year who earned his quota place for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event more than two months ago. Temirzhanov won his key quarter-final fight against Iran’s technician Daniyal Shakhbakhsh in Amman and secured his place to the Olympic Games.

Serik Temirzhanov was born in 1998 and grew up in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan where he began boxing at the early ages. The Kazakh boxer won their Junior National Championships in 2013 and achieved bronze at the Kiev AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in that year.

Temirzhanov earned gold medal at the Pavlodar 2016 ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships and moved ahead in the Kazakh elite rankings step by step in the recent three years. He was named as the Best Boxer of the 2019 Bocskai Memorial Tournament but his career highlight is the quota for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

“I enjoyed so much the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event where everything was fine for me. This was my biggest international event since the Pavlodar 2016 ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships. The preparation before the event was went according to our plans with my coaches and the plenty of training camps supported my developments.

I worked strongly together with my coaches and my tactical skills were even better than in the past. My attitude and psychological preparation was also good enough to control my fights in the Qualifiers.

I felt myself well-prepared in the Qualifiers following these efforts and qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games. I know the event was postponed to 2021 but it means that I will have more time to prepare well and analyze my possible opponents,” said Kazakhstan’s new featherweight (57kg) hope Serik Temirzhanov who secured his quota place as all of the others from his strong team.
