Japan’s Tsuboi and Okazawa won key contests in the evening session

The winners of the tenth session in the Asian Games advanced to the quarter-finals and many of them are only one step away to earn an Olympic spot.
Uzbekistan’s Tokyo Olympic Games quarter-finalist Raykhona Kodirova impressed in the first bout of the evening session, she had a quick and successful contest against Qatar’s Dana Al-Jabor at the women’s lightweight (60kg). The 30-year-old Uzbek returned to the national team after a short break but she was too strong for Qatar’s first female boxer in the history of the Asian Games. She will now meet for the Olympic quota and the guaranteed medal with Chinese Taipei’s Tokyo Olympian Wu Shih Yi.
Mongolia’s Nomin-Erdene Tugsjargal was a surprise silver medallist at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships one year ago and she had a great finish to beat Japan’s Ayaka Taguchi in the women’s lightweight (60kg). The 20-year-old former Asian Junior Champion will have a tough opponent, China’s Yang Wenlu, a World Champion, who eliminated Vietnam’s SEA Games winner Ha Thi Linh today.
The men’s flyweight (51kg) is one the super strong categories in the Asian Games, Japan’s 2021 World Champion Tomoya Tsuboi had to meet India’s Deepak Bhoria in the Round of 16 during the evening session. The Indian was bronze medallist in the recent World Championships but today the quick Japanese defeated him winning the bout by 4:1 split decision. Tsuboi’s next rival will be Kyrgyzstan’s Nurzhigit Dyushebayev who had a clear success over Afghanistan’s Abdul Jabar Popalzai.
Pakistan’s historic ASBC Asian medallist Zohaib Rasheed had to wait until the fifth competition day to open his campaign against United Arab Emirates’ Sultan Al-Nuaimi. The Pakistani boxer used his safest distance in their flyweight (51kg) meeting as the UAE hopeful knocked out his previous rival in Hangzhou. Rasheed had the height advantage to keep the best distance in this contest from the first seconds until the last and he can prepare a fight against Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov.
Japan’s 2021 World Champion Sewon Okazawa had a key contest already in the Round of 16 at the men’s light middleweight (71kg) but he had a tight victory over Jordan’s Olympian Zeyad Eshaish in this contest. Okazawa landed his body shots and used his speed on their re-match and this time he was able to beat Jordan’s hero. Okazawa can expect the next tough battle, as his opponent will be India’s Nishant Dev who knocked out Vietnam’s Bui Phuoc Tung in the next bout.
Kazakhstan’s defending World Champion at the light middleweight (71kg), Aslanbek Shymbergenov is one of the top stars of the Games and he had an emerging victory against China’s newcomer Wang Peicheng in Hangzhou. Shymbergenov will now meet Uzbekistan’s welterweight World Champion Asadkhudja Muydinkhudjayev in a key quarter-final bout in this exceptional Asian Games.
