Boxers at the women’s flyweight (51kg), men’s middleweight (75kg) and men’s super heavyweight (+91kg) were in actions in the sixth day of boxing. All of the winners advanced to the quarter-finals and these boxers need only one further step to win a medal in Tokyo.

Altogether 70 Asian boxers including 26 women and 44 men are able to represent their nations in the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games. The final number of the boxers is 289 in the Games where thirteen champions will be crowned in Tokyo.

Philippines’ Eumir Felix Marcial opened his campaign with an RSC success

Philippines impressed in the opening five competition days, all of their boxers won their contests and the country remained unbeaten in Tokyo. AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Eumir Felix Marcial returned to the competitions at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships but he used the event only as preparations. He finalized his long training sessions in the United States before the Games and he arrived in super shape to Tokyo. Marcial met with an Algerian rival, Younes Nemouchi in the last 16 of the middleweight (75kg) but he spent less than three rounds in the ring. The Filipino knocked down his rival and the referee confirmed Marcial’s RSC success after 161 seconds.

Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jalolov was fantastic as first in Tokyo

Uzbekistan’s superstar Bakhodir Jalolov won the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships three-times in the Olympic cycle and he is the defending AIBA World Champion as well. The 202cm tall Uzbek won all of his international events in the recent years and arrived to Tokyo as the main favourite of the super heavyweight (+91kg). Jalolov met with Azerbaijan’s former EUBC European Youth Champion Mahammad Abdullayev who tried to catch the taller Uzbek with strong attacks. Jalolov has got impressive athletic skills and his defence was too difficult for the Azeri boxer, furthermore the Uzbek stopped Abdullayev with strict jabs. Jalolov knocked down his opponent in the second round and dominated all of the exchanges therefore he marched into the quarter-finals.

India’s Satish Kumar also advanced to the last eight at the super heavyweight

India’s Satish Kumar is a 32-year-old veteran at the super heavyweight (+91kg) who reached the quarter-finals already at the 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Following eight years of experiences in the major championships, he performed well in the first round against Jamaica’s lone boxer in the Olympic Games, Ricardo Brown. Kumar had some difficulties in the second but his efforts were enough to beat the Caribbean boxer with good finish in the third round.

Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong defeated her main regional rival

Thailand and Philippines are great rivals in the Southeast Asian region, their boxers are also in top form at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Jutamas Jitpong is only 23 but she produced already some strong results during her career in the recent three years. The Thai flyweight (51kg) boxer is in the best shape and started strongly against Philippines’ Irish Magno in Tokyo. Jitpong was too strong for the older Filipino and the Thai talent advanced to the quarter-finals of the weight class.

Chinese Taipei’s Huang Hsiao Wen is quarter-finalist

Chinese Taipei lost its best boxer, AIBA Women’s World Champion Lin Yu Ting was eliminated by Philippines’ Nesthy Petecio on Day3 but their other three girls are all still in action in the Olympic Games. Huang Hsiao Wen moved down to the flyweight (51kg) following her gold medal at the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and she is now quarter-finalist in Tokyo. Huang used her longer hands and kept the distance successfully against Italy’s Giordana Sorrentino in their today’s contest.

Kazakhstan’s Abilkhan Amankul opened his campaign with a success

Kazakhstan performed well in the opening three competition days but after that they lost some of their top boxers including Ablaikhan Zhussupov, Bekzad Nurdauletov and Vasiliy Levit. Their Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Abilkhan Amankul was nervous in the first round against Uzbekistan’s Fanat Kakhramonov and he had disadvantage after three minutes. Kakhramonov is inexperienced in comparison to the other Uzbek boxers therefore his leading was a surprise but Amankul returned to the contest with energetic attacks. The Kazakh boxer produced excellent second and third rounds and turned back their battle in Tokyo.

Kazakhstan’s Kamshybek Kunkabayev joined to the last eight at the super heavyweight

Kazakhstan’s Kamshybek Kunkabayev was silver medallist in the recent two AIBA World Boxing Championships and also in the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships. The 30-year-old Kazakh super heavyweight (+91kg) boxer landed nice jabs in the first round against Egypt’s Mostafa Hafez Rezk Yousry and he had the advantage in each of the scorecard. Kunkabayev knew the best tactic against the North African and advanced to the last eight following Jalolov and Kumar.

Japan’s Tsukimi Namiki had impressive footwork today

Japan’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Tsukimi Namiki will be turning to 23 later this year but she is one of the favourites of the flyweight (51kg) in the Tokyo Olympic Games. The Japanese met with Brazil’s experienced Grazieli Sousa and she was a hard target for the South American. Namiki danced through the whole ring in the first round and the Japanese southpaw looked motivated against the Brazilian. The Japanese star began the second round with quick attacks and nice combinations, furthermore she kept the best fighting distance in that period. Namiki caught the static Brazilian and her nice style of boxing delivered a quarter-final place for the host country’s boxer.

China’s Chang Yuan eliminated a strong European rival on Day6

China’s Chang Yuan is the next favourite for the title at the women’s flyweight (51kg) and she opened her campaign only in the sixth competition day.
