Iran earned a historical first medal in Belgrade

The AIBA World Boxing Championships finished with twelve strong competition days and many of the developing countries reached historical results in Belgrade, Serbia. ASBC Asian Boxing Championships silver medallist Daniyal Shakhbakhsh was highly confident in the competition and his outstanding technical skills delivered for him a bronze in the Serbian capital which was Iran’s first ever medal in the history of the event.

The Iranian team performed well during the AIBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships in Belgrade, their boxers won several tough contests against top opponents, proving their developments. Mr. Alireza Esteki’s team arrived with ten boxers to the AIBA World Boxing Championships and their hopes won ten out of their twenty bouts in Belgrade.

Their Dubai 2021 ASBC Asian Boxing Championships silver medallist Daniyal Shakhbakhsh arrived to Belgrade in top shape and he felt himself as confident at the lightweight (60kg). Gambia’s US-based Musa Cham and Mexico’s young Gustavo Rivera were his first opponents at the round of 64 and 32 but none of them could handle the Iranian boxer’s speed and high rhythm.

He delivered one of his best ever performances against Kyrgyzstan’s Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu in the round of 16 at the lightweight (60kg). He worked a lot on feet to catch his experienced Kyrgyz opponent with counter-attacks from the first seconds. The Iranian amazed all of the fans in the venue and advanced to the quarter-finals in the AIBA World Boxing Championships as lone boxer from his nation.

For the guaranteed medal, Shakhbakhsh met with Lithuania’s Edgaras Skurdelis who has been attending in the international events since 2006 and he had more than 300 contests already. The seven-years younger Iranian had better technical skills against the experienced and tough Lithuanian and Shakhbakhsh eliminated his fourth opponent achieving a guaranteed medal in the event. He was not able to box against Uzbekistan’s AIBA Youth World Champion Abdumalik Khalakov Iran achieved two silver and two bronze medals in the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Dubai which was their best performance in the recent more than one decade. Their next prominent result in the elite level is Daniyal Shakhbakhsh’s historical bronze medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships.
