India’s living legend Mary Kom leads their team in the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships

The Indian women’s elite boxing team will be attending in the upcoming ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships which will be starting with its first competition day on November 2. India’s legendary woman boxer five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte will be also involved to the squad and will be fighting for her next title in Vietnam.
Behind China and DPR Korea, India is the third most successful country in the history of the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships therefore their expectations are high in Ho Chi Minh City. The Indian ladies were successful also in the Astana 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships where Sonia Lather Singh achieved silver medal at the featherweight (57kg).
Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte is a national boxing icon in India, whose life was presented also in the Indian cinemas as a role model for the younger age groups. Mary Kom is five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion and moved back to her original light flyweight (48kg) to get her next title in the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships in Ho Chi Minh City.
Neeraj, who will be attending at the flyweight (51kg), is a new face in the national squad who won the Nations Women’s Cup in Serbia which was her first ever international competition out of India. Her teammate Rohtak-based Shiksha also joined to the their national squad this year and after seven years of experiences she is ready to show her skills in her first ever ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships.
Sonia Lather Singh has got 90 bouts already during his career and after her silver medal in the Astana 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships she is among the favourites of the featherweight (57kg). Priyanka Chaudhary attended in her first ever international competition still back in 2009 therefore she is also an experienced team member who will be fighting for at least a medal at the lightweight (60kg).
Sarita Devi Laishram is another living legend in India’s women boxing besides to Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte. She claimed silver medal in the first edition of the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships in 2001 and since then Devi secured titles also in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and in the continental events. The Imphal-based 35-year-old veteran will be attending in her new category at the light welterweight (64kg) in the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships.
AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Saweety Boora and ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships runner-up Pooja Rani changed their weight categories in the recent months. Boora has been competing in the Olympic middleweight (75kg) now while Rani moved up to the light heavyweight (81kg) to maximize their possible results in Ho Chi Minh City.
Seema Poonia claimed bronze medal in the 2015 ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships in Wulanchabu therefore she is hungry to do better at the heavyweight (+81kg) in Ho Chi Minh City. India’s youngest team member in the Vietnam event will be 20-year-old Lovlina Borgohain who could be a new sensation at the welterweight (69kg).
