Hussamuddin, Thapa and Sangwan were too experienced for their opponents at the Indian National Championships

The Indian Men’s National Boxing Championships was held for their elite male boxers in the city of Baddi which was a seven-day long competition. Among India’s high ranked and experienced boxers Mohamed Hussamuddin, Shiva Thapa and London 2012 Olympian Sumit Sangwan won their weight classes in the National Championships.

Boxing Federation of India has got many projects and the country is ready to host the biggest championships in the upcoming years. The best Indians competed in the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships with great successes where their hopes claimed two medals. Many of their stars had to miss the Indian National Championships due their preparation to the Olympic Qualifiers.

The light flyweight (49kg) is always strong in India and their new wave of boxers, SSCB’s Vinod Tanwar and Ajay Pendor advanced to the final of the National Championships following their successes in the semi-finals. Tanwar delivered his best performance with perfect timing in the final and claimed his first national title.

One of the strongest division in India is the flyweight (52kg) where Amit Panghal claimed silver medal in the AIBA World Boxing Championships. In his absence 2012 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Polipalli Lalitha Prasad defeated the top opponents as Sparsh Kumar and Ashish Insha in the final.

Mohamed Hussamuddin achieved medals in several international tournaments in the recent three years but his success over AIBA Youth World Champion Sachin Siwach Singh was a top result from the 25-year-old boxer. The title of the lightweight (60kg) was won by Varinder Singh who defeated V. Durga Rao in the fourth final of the event.

Amman 2013 ASBC Asian Champion and two-time Olympian Shiva Thapa is one of the most experienced Indian male boxers but he has got such a strong national rival as Manish Kaushik who claimed bronze medal at the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships. The 26-year-old Thapa had a young but talented rival in the final, Akash therefore he had to do his very best to win the title of the Nationals.

The final of the welterweight (69kg) was a short contest which was won by SSCB’s Naveen Boora who knocked out Jayesh Desai quickly. Ankit Khatana and Rohit Tokas both moved up to the middleweight (75kg) in the recent months and both boxers defeated their rivals during the road to the finals. The 26-year-old Tokas was not well to box in the final therefore Khatana walked over to the gold in this division.

India had a few difficulties at the light heavyweight (81kg) in the recent years which was won by Sachin Kumar this time. London 2012 Olympian Sumit Sangwan walked over to the gold medal following his opponent AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Naman Tanwar was unable to box in the final of the heavyweight (91kg). The super heavyweight (+91kg) also saw tough battles which was won by SSCB’s Narender Berwal over Krishna Sharma in the final.
