Hasanboy Dusmatov returned to the top of the Olympic podium after eight years while Seyitbek Uulu made a history for Kyrgyzstan

De PINA David (CPV) in RED and DUSMATOV Hasanboy (UZB) in BLUE compete in the Men’s 51kg category at the Boxing Tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the North Paris Arena (NPA), Paris, France, on August 4, 2024.

Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov bagged his second Olympic title after eight years of break while Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu has done a historic success for Kyrgyzstan.

Thirteen weight categories, 248 top boxers, 124 female and 124 male athletes from 69 nations will compete in the boxing event of the Paris Olympics.

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Thailand, China, Chinese Taipei, India, the Philippines, Tajikistan, Jordan, Mongolia, South Korea, DPR Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan and Palestine will have boxers in the Olympic Games from the Asian continent.

Uzbekistan’s Abdumalik Khalokov is one of the main stars in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games who impressed in the recent two rounds as well. The World Champion Uzbek used his counter-attacking style from the first seconds against Australia’s surprise semi-finalist Charlie Senior. The Aussie boxer was never stopped attacking but Khalokov’s long-distance tactics and speed decided their featherweight (57kg) semi-final. Khalokov’s summersault after the victorious bout was once again exciting for the crowd but Charlie Senior joined him parallel.

Kyrgyzstan’s lone boxer in the Olympics, Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu had a seriously tough draw but he eliminated Cuba’s Saidel Horta and United States’ World Champion Jahmal Harvey as well. He earned not only Kyrgyzstan’s first ever Olympic medal but the 28-year-old boxer advanced to the final of the men’s featherweight (57kg) to box against Khalokov. His opponent in the last four, the European Games winner Javier Ibanez did not land enough punches and the Kyrgyz boy continued his personal boxing history.

China’s Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Li Qian knew her Australian opponent, Caitlin Parker well enough to build up a successful strategy in their women’s middleweight (75kg) semi-final bout. The tall and veteran Chinese moved forward more than in her previous contests and she reached the Australian boxer with jabs enough times to win this contest therefore she will now meet Panama’s Atheyna Bylon for the gold medal.

Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov claimed a gold medal and won the best boxer trophy at the Rio Olympics eight years ago and he had the strong plan to return to the top of the podium. The 31-year-old flyweight (51kg) boxer knocked out his final opponent, France’s Billal Bennama in the last edition of the World Boxing Championships but he expected a hard battle in Paris on their re-match. Dusmatov is a smaller boxer than the French but his speed and quick actions guaranteed his second Olympic gold medal after eight years of break.

Chang Yuan of China had a surprise success over the best technician boxer of the women’s bantamweight (54kg), the World Champion Pang Chol Mi of DPR Korea in their semi-final bout. Following that success, the 27-year-old Chinese used the same strategy against Turkey’s 2022 World Champion Hatice Akbas and she won the Olympic title after 10 years of her Youth Olympic gold medal.
