Fourteen Asians cruise to World Championships finals

Fourteen Asian stars advanced to the gold medal round of the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships 2023 after their victories on the eleventh competition day at the Humor Arena in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Seven boxers from the host nation triumphed in the semifinals while five pugs from Kazakhstan and one each from Mongolia and China achieved the same feat.

Uzbekistan’s reigning Olympic champion Bakhodir Jalolov continued his quest to reclaim the world super heavyweight (+92kg) title as he enjoyed a walkover against Spain’s European Championships silver medallist Ayoub Ghadfa.

Rio Olympics and three-time ASBC Asian Champion Hasanboy Dusmatov decimated Spain’s European winner Martin Molina, 5-0, in the flyweight (51kg) class even as Asian champ Abdumalik Khalakov stopped Kyrgyzstan’s historic bronze medalist Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu in the opening round of their featherweight (57kg) bout.

Other Uzbek semi-final victors were Oybek Jurayev (bantam-54kg), Ruslan Abdullayev (light welter-63.5kg), Asadkhudja Muydinkhudjayev (welter-67kg) and the two-time ASBC Asian Champion Saidjamshid Jafarov (light middle-71kg).

Defending Asian Champion Sanzhar Tashkenbay started strong for Kazakhstan, trouncing Russia’s Edmond Khudoyan, 5-0, in minimumweight (48kg) while 2021 World silver finisher Makhmud Sabyrkhan crushed Cuba’s veteran Yosbany Veitia, 5-0, in bantamweight.

Asian titleholder Aslanbek Shymbergenov (light middle), former Youth World Champion Nurbek Oralbay (light heavy-80kg) and Dulat Bekbauov (welter) were the other Kazakhs who barged into the gold medal round.

The Dubai 2021 Asian Champion and two-time Olympian Chinzorig Baatarsukh became Mongolia’s first finalist since 2009 as he defeated Tajikistan’s best boxer Bakhodur Usmonov, 4-1, in light welterweight.

China’s emerging boxer, the Xinjiang-based Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan took a final berth in light heavyweight after eking out a split decision victory over Spain’s Gazimagomed Jalidov after the bout review.
