Five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte leads the Indian team in New Delhi

A local hero five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte could be one of the top stars of the upcoming 10th edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships which will be starting in New Delhi next week.
The Indian capital New Delhi is the host at the second time of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships after 2006. The Indian boxers earned four gold medals and among them Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte and Sarita Devi Laishram will be there once again in the event after 12 years. Their Italian head coach Mr. Raffaele Bergamasco is planning to be achieved the same success in the new edition.
India is one of the most successful nations in the history of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. Their boxers claimed 8 gold medals, 6 silvers and 14 bronze medals since 2001. The 28 Indian medals means the country is No.3 in the Overall Medal Rankings after Russia and China and the second best Asian women’s team. India had one finalist in the last edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Astana two years ago.
The Indian Open Boxing Tournament, the Shuchinsk International Women’s Tournament, the Commonwealth Games, the Ulaanbaatar Box Cup, the Kapolri Cup, the Asian Games, the Ahmet Comert Tournament and the Silesian Open Women’s Tournament were their main preparation events before the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
India’s national boxing icon five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion and five-time ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte returned to her light flyweight (48kg) after her unsuccessful qualification events for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and since then she is shining in her best division. The Indian star is the main favourite for the gold medal in the lowest weight class in New Delhi.
Experienced Pinky Jangra Rani, who is member of the national team since 2011, attended in the Commonwealth Games this April and she received the right to box once again in a major event in 2018. The 28-year-old Hisar-based boxer is India’s flyweight (51kg) participant in New Delhi where she can expect high number of world class rivals.
India’s new bantamweight (54kg) boxer Manisha Moun impressed in the preparation events, defeated more experienced rivals such as Kazakhstan’s AIBA Women’s World Champion Dina Zholaman and Russia’s Viktoria Kuleshova. The 20-year-old talent could be a new sensation in the upcoming AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
Another young talent the 21-year-old Sonia from Bhiwani will be India’s choice at the featherweight (57kg) who attended in her first international event only in 2017. Besides to Mary Kom another former AIBA Women’s World Champion Sarita Devi Laishram was also selected to the team and the veteran will be attending at the lightweight (60kg) in New Delhi.
Simranjit Kaur achieved bronze medal in the Albena 2013 AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships and after five years she could be a new flag bearer at the light welterweight (64kg) following her gold at the Ahmet Comert Tournament. Lovlina Borgohain attended in the recent ASBC and Commonwealth events and her development is significant at the welterweight (69kg).
AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Saweety Boora is 25 but she has got more than enough experiences to get the podium on home soil. Bhagyabati Kachari and Seema Poonia are both also well-known boxers in the international events and India have got strong potential also in the heaviest weight classes.
