The last part of the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships 2023 men’s quarterfinals ensued in the fourth competition day with 17 exhilarating matches at the Huamark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, host Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam are the participating 20 countries in Bangkok.

Central Asian powerhouses Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan nabbed more medals on Saturday.

Here are the highlights from Day 4:

Uzbekistan’s emerging pug Shokhjakhon Abdullayev chalked up the first knockout in the second edition of the Asian U22 tilt, stunning Kazakhstan’s three-time ASBC champion Sagyndyk Togambay in the opening round of their cruiserweight (86kg) bout.

Kielce 2021 Youth World Champion Jakhongir Zokirov and Asian youth titlist Nusratbek Tokhirov also delivered strong performances for Uzbekistan in the super heavyweight (+92kg) and heavyweight (92kg) classes.

Bekhzod Khamidov was silver medallist in the recent Elite National Championships and he represents Uzbekistan at the welterweight (67kg) in Bangkok. The 21-year-old Bukhara-based Uzbek knocked down Thailand’s Rattapol Kadamduan in the first round and he won the quarter-final unanimously.

Kazakhstan’s Youth World Champion 20-year-old Sabyrzhan Akkalykov moved up to light middleweight (71kg) where he sealed a bronze after stopping Kuwait’s Salman Al-Shammari in the second round.

Ex-Asian youth champion and Elite National Champion Mukhammedsabyr Bazarbay Uulu (light welter-63.5kg) and Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Dias Molzhigitov (middle-75kg) added medals for Kazakhstan as well.

Kyrgyzstan’s ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships bronze medallist Nuradin Rustambek Uulu hacked out a first-round RSC victory against Singapore’s Eugene Mok Wei Jin in light middleweight while Askat Kultayev beat the Philippines’ Mark Ashley Fajardo, 4-1, in light welterweight.

Dovud Makhkamov gave Tajikistan its first medal in the tournament by pulling off a 4-1 triumph at the expense of Iraq’s Hussein Yousif Naeem in their light middleweight clash. Tajikistan’s Abdumalik Boltayev moved forward and kept his Thai opponent, Lomfa Thongburan on short in the first round and landed the stronger shots. Boltayev, who competed already in the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships as well, was too strong for the local boxer and dominated that fight in Bangkok. China’s Halimulati Rehemandu came through with a resounding 3-2 upset over hometown bet and Belgrade World Championships 2021 bronze finisher Weerapon Jongjoho in light heavyweight (80kg) causing the main sensation of the day.
