Chen Ziyi, Zhao Xuan and Yu Lisai were the women’s surprise winners at the Chinese National Games

The female finals of the Chinese National Games delivered sensational surprises in the city of Shenzhen where the event saw several of the world’s stars.
The Chinese National Games holds every four years and boxing is included to the official program of this important multisport event. There were qualification events for the Chinese National Games and only the best 16 boxers could participate per weight class.
Wu Yu won several major international championships during her career and she is one of the best female boxers in the whole world at the light flyweight (50kg). The technician boxer kept her final opponent, Qi Xinyu on long and she controlled their meeting to win the first female title of the National Games.
Hebei’s Chang Yuan won all of the big events during her career in the recent 12 years starting from 2013 and she advanced to the final of the bantamweight (54kg) easily as expected. The 28-year-old boxer suffered an unexpected loss to Zhao Xuan in the final which was the first huge surprise of the Games.
Jiangsu’s Xu Zichun represented China at the featherweight (57kg) in all of the major international events in the recent two years and she had strong performance in the final against Hebei’s Cai Yan to earn the gold medal by 3:2 split decision while the titleholder Ruan Mulan lost her bout already in the quarter-final.
The World Champions such as Guizhou’s Yang Chengyu and Sichuan’s Yang Wenlu were the main favourites at the lightweight (60kg) but one of the new talents, Chen Ziyi of Shanxi surprised them with her brilliant performance in Shenzhen.
The World Champion Yang Liu of Inner Mongolia lost her semi-final bout at the welterweight (66kg) which was another sensation in the Games. Beitida’s Yu Lisai made her international debut in 2016 at the age of 16 but her final triumph in this weight class was another unexpected result.
The multiple World Champion Li Qian, another World Champion Wang Lina, Zheng Lu and Wang Xiaomeng were the stars of the middleweight (75kg) but none of them could take the title in the Games. Zhejiang’s Ye Jin defeated Wang Lina in the final by 3:2 split decision while Jiangsu’s Youth World Champion 19-year-old Bao Ziyi claimed a bronze medal.
The Chinese National Games served as the main selection competition for the upcoming major international championships in 2026.
