Bautista, Mouzinho, Yeasungnoen win in SEA Games opener

Philippines’ Ian Clark Bautista, Timor Leste’s Delio Anzaqeci Mouzinho and Thailand’s Peerapat Yeasungnoen came through with triumphant debuts in the opening day of the 31st Southeast Asian Games boxing tournament at the Bac Ninh Gymnasium in Vietnam.

The 2019 SEA Games bronze medalist Bautista eliminated Singapore’s Mohamed Hanurdeen Bin Hamid in the preliminary round of the featherweight (57kg) division.

In the middleweight (75kg) class, Mouzinho made a surprise by taking an RSC (referee stops contest) victory over Malaysia’s more experienced boxer Muhammad Firdaus Bin Kamarulzaman.

AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships bronze finisher Yeasungnoen had a tougher assignment against hometown bet Bui Phuoc Tung but the 22-year-old Thai fighter managed to emerge victorious.

In other matches, SEA Games 2019 gold winner James Palicte of the Philippines edged out Vu Thanh Dat of Vietnam in the lightweight (63kg) category while Cambodia’s Sao Rangsey and Hun Kim Heang also came up with wins in the featherweight and middleweight, respectively.

The 31st SEA Games boxing event, which will run until May 22, features seven weight categories in the men’s division and four in women’s class.
