Askat Kultayev eliminated India’s Shiva Thapa in a superb contest

Kyrgyzstan’s Askat Kultayev delivered the main sensation of the afternoon session in the fourth competition day in Hangzhou where he eliminated India’s veteran Shiva Thapa.

Bangladesh’s Mohamed Salim Hossain won the country’s first contest in the Asian Games on Day3 and their US-based Zinnat Ferdous also made her debut in Hangzhou. She began boxing only two years ago next to her jobs in the United States but she made the level of the Asian Games so quickly. Mongolia’s ASBC medallist Yesugen Oyuntsetseg was too experienced for her but she was Bangladesh’s first female boxer in the history of the Asian Games.

Nepal’s Susma Tamang earned a historic silver medal at the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships in Bangkok earlier this year and she received the right to represent the promising country in Hangzhou as well. Her opponent was Kazakhstan’s two-time World Champion Nazym Kyzaibay who did not underestimate the 21-year-old boxer from Nepal and she worked hard until the last seconds. Kyzaibay was technically better than the young Tamang and the Kazakh marched to the quarter-finals of the women’s light flyweight (50kg).

Singapore sent only one boxer to the Asian Games, only Danisha Mathialagan made the national criteria to compete in Hangzhou. She had a surprise success at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in March but she faced a top quality opponent, Uzbekistan’s two-time ASBC Asian U22 Champion Sabina Bobokulova today. The 20-year-old Uzbek used different rhythm in their meeting and she won all of the three rounds in each of the scorecards.

China’s Wu Yu moved down to the light flyweight (50kg) and she was favoured to participate in the Asian Games instead of their new spearhead, Hu Meiyi. Wu Yu earned the trust of the Chinese national coaches as she impressed in a very difficult contest on Day4 when she met DPR Korea’s Kang Su Hyang. The Chinese boxer was highly confident from the second round and she eliminated the North Korean No.1 on home soil.

Lai Chu En had a quick success in the first preliminary round of the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg) but he had a more difficult contest in the Round of 16 today. The Rio Olympian opened the first round in excellent rhythm against Nepal’s Bhupendra Thapa and he took the lead on the scorecards. Chinese Taipei’s best male boxer had a few difficulties in the second but he was once again superb in the third to win his second contest in Hangzhou.

Philippines’ Mark Ashley Fajardo knocked out his first rival but the 18-year-old talent was not enough experienced for China’s Wang Xiangyang in the Round of 16 at the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg). Iraq’s ASBC Asian U22 Championships silver medallist Ali Qasim Hamdan Al-Sarray won his second contest by large margin of differences, Pakistan’s Ibrahim Khan and he joined the last eight.

Kyrgyzstan’s Askat Kultayev impressed in the first preliminary stage of the Asian Games and he marched into the quarter-finals on Day4 when he got a big scalp in Hangzhou. India’s six-time Asian Championships medallist and two-time Olympian Shiva Thapa was not enough fresh for Kultayev today and the Kyrgyz eliminated the veteran boxer winning his second contest in the Games.
