Asians launch fiery start in IBA Men’s World Championships

Eighteen Asian standouts opened their respective campaigns on a high in the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships at the Humo Arena in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Monday.

With their resounding triumphs on Day 1, the Asians advanced to the Round of 32 of the prestigious tournament.

Strandja Memorial Tournament champion Mujibullo Tursunov gave the host country a winning start after thrashing India’s ASBC Asian Championships bronze medalist Varinder Singh, 5-0, in the lightweight (60kg) division.

Kazakhstan’s reigning Asian champ and 2018 Youth Olympics gold winner Aibek Oralbay destroyed Bulgaria’s Radoslav Pantaleev, 5-0, in the heavyweight (92kg) class.

Tajikistan’s former Junior World Champion Asror Vokhidov eliminated South Korea’s Lee Ye Chan, 5-0, while China’s 2014 Youth Olympics medalist Liu Ping outclassed South Africa’s Amzolele Dyeyi with the same scoreline in featherweight (57kg).

India’s two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Mohammed Hussamuddin used his speed to beat North Macedonia’s Alen Rustemovski via unanimous decision also at the featherweight (57kg).

Bahrain’s Tokyo Olympian Danis Latypov struggled in the opening round against Turkmenistan’s Baky Toychyyev but managed to pull off an RSC victory in the second round of their super heavyweight (+92kg) bout.

China had several problems at the super heavyweight (+92kg) in the previous years but might be the Xinjiang-based Danabieke Bayikewuzi will be the solution for them. The Chinese boxer met a more experienced European rival, Luka Pratljacic from Croatia but Bayikewuzi surprised his opponent with energetic shots.

Other notable Asian winners on the opening day were Tajikistan’s Asian junior silver finisher Abubakr Murodzoda (light), Mongolia’s Enkhtur Tegshjargal (feather), and Kazakhstan’s new national team member Talgat Syrymbetov (light).

The Tajik lightweight (60kg) boxer, the 19-year-old Murodzoda dominated the first two rounds against Sierra Leone’s Abu Kanu and he finished the bout in the third.

The IBA Men’s World Championships will run until May 14.
