Asian youth champs dominate in India’s national tourney

Bishwamitra Chongtham and three other Asian champions emerged triumphant in the men’s boxing competition of the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games held recently in Panchkula, Haryana.

Chongtham, a gold medalist in the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships and a bronze finisher in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships last year, manhandled all his opponents to reign supreme in the flyweight (51kg) division.

Two-time Asian winner Vishwanath Suresh survived a tough quarterfinal bout against Punjab’s Gopi before beating Haryana’s Ashish in the final to rule the minimumweight (48kg) class.

ASBC Asian Youth 2022 titilst Vanshaj convincingly won all his four bouts en route to the light welterweight (63.5kg) title while 2021 champ Vishal asserted his dominance in the light heavyweight (80kg) category.

Ankit (bantam-54kg), Himashu Shrivas (feather-57kg), Rabichandra Singh Laishangbam (light-60kg), Achal Veer Karwasra (welter-67kg), Harshit Rathee (light middle-71kg) and Deepak (middle-75kg) were the other golden boys in the national youth tilt.

The India Youth Games, which drew a total of 117 young talents from 28 regions of the country, served as a selection trial for the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships set to take place on November 6-20 in Alicante, Spain.
