ASBC youth stars dominate Kazakhstan elite men prelims

Former ASBC Asian youth champions came through with solid showings in the preliminary round of the Kazakhstan Elite Men National Championships 2022 in Pavlodar.

Coming off the ASBC Asian Elite Championships in Amman, Sanatali Toltayev made a rousing debut in the national tournament after pummelling Aktleu Kenzhigaliyev, 5-0, in the light welterweight (63.5kg) class.

Reigning national champion Vasiliy Samchuk had a tough battle against 2021 Asian youth titlist Yelnur Suyunbay but he managed to eke out a 4-1 win in light welterweight.

The Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament silver medallist Sultan Mussinov of Akmola region and Yertugan Zeinullinov of Almaty region both advanced to the next stage of boxing at the light welterweight (63.5kg).

The light middleweight (71kg) is an open category in the National Championships with several gold medal favourites on the board. Pavlodar region’s Kuan Kuatov walked over to the quarter-finals against Abylaykhan Yergesh, and the 20-year-old Margulan Aidaruly also followed him after beating Alikhan Zhakupov. Yermakhan Zhakpekov proved too experienced for Timur Yeskozhin as the ex-Asian champ scored an easy 5-0 victory in light middleweight (71kg).

Beibarys Zheksen, an Asian youth winner in 2019, trounced Nurym Duisenbek, 5-0, in featherweight (57kg) while last year’s titlist Nursultan Altynbek beat Yerassyl Dauletbay, 4-1, in bantamweight (54kg).

Abay’s Ruslan Kuzeubayev was also successful in the junior and youth age groups in the previous years and this national event could be a breakthrough for him among the elite boxers but he had a tough preliminary bout against Almas Nurgali.

Meanwhile, 2021 youth world champion Sabyrzhan Akkalykov disposed of Azat Asanov with a 5-0 romp in light middleweight and silver finisher Yerbolat Sabyr stopped Bekzat Konysbay in the third round of their featherweight bout.

Asian Boxing Confederation Vice-President and Kazakhstan Boxing Federation VP Mr. Aziz Kozhambetov is overseeing the competition joined by 199 boxers from different regions.
