ASBC President Mr. Anas Alotaiba sends his best wishes to the Qatar Boxing Federation on their National Day

The President of the Asian Boxing Confederation Mr. Anas Alotaiba, and the whole ASBC management are sending their best wishes to the Qatar Boxing Federation and their whole Boxing Family on their annual National Day.

The Qatar National Day is a commemoration of Qatar’s unification in 1878 and it is celebrated annually on 18 December. Jassim Bin Mohammed Al-Thani succeeded his father Mohammed Bin Thani as ruler of the Qatari Peninsula on that day in 1878. He unified the local tribes also to combat against the British who later ruled the state until 1971.

The holiday was officially established by a 21 June 2007 decree of the Crown Prince and Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamam Bin Al-Thani and it is well-known also as Founder’s Day. The Qatar National Day helped also to improve the common heritage, the knowledge and the national identity among local and expats.

Qatar National Day is a national holiday and most of the public are given the day off from school and work. Several national activities are organized during the week of observance including firework shows, Katara National Day celebrations, National Day parade and classical car show.

Qatar involved to the international boxing events in 2000 when the developing country attended at the Budapest AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships and some of their boxers won opening contests 21 years ago. Qatar reached its top highlight at the Doha 2006 Asian Games where their Hzam Nabah achieved a historical bronze medal.

Qatar’s capital city, Doha hosted the 2015 edition of the AIBA World Boxing Championships with great success. Two of their boxers qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the very first time and the country competed in several editions of the AIBA and ASBC Boxing Championships. Thulasi Tharumalingam and Hakan Erseker were their first ever Olympian boxers in Rio de Janeiro which made another top highlight for the country. The President of the Qatar Boxing Federation Mr. Yousuf Ali Al-Kazim is the Vice-President of the Asian Boxing Confederation and he is member of the IBA Board of Directors. The experienced official and the coaches of the national team built up a new squad in the recent two years and they are planning to attend in several events in 2022.
