ASBC President Mr. Anas Alotaiba and the whole ASBC management are sending their sincere condolences to the Watanabe’s family

The President of the Asian Boxing Confederation Mr. Anas Alotaiba, furthermore and the whole ASBC management are sending their sincere condolences to Japan’s Watanabe’s family following their Rome 1960 Olympian boxer Mr. Katsuji Watanabe passing away before his 81st birthday.

Mr. Katsuji Watanabe was born in Fukushima, Japan in March 11, 1940 and competed boxing in 1950s and 1960s that era when the sport became popular in the East Asian country. He won the All-Japan National Boxing Championships and several other tournaments in his homeland which delivered for him a guaranteed place in the national team.

Mr. Katsuji Watanabe was selected to attend at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games short after his 20th birthday. He competed at the light welterweight (63.5kg) in the Olympic Games where he had a tough contest against Italy’s local star Piero Brandi. Watanabe competed also in an important dual match in Warsaw, Poland one year later in 1961 when the host country was one of the biggest powers of boxing. Watanabe had the chance to box against Poland’s two-time Olympic Champion Jerzy Kulej in that dual match. May his soul will rest in eternal peace in Japan.
