ASBC Heroes – Thailand’s two-time ASBC Asian Women’s Youth Champion Porntip Buapa

Thailand’s Porntip Buapa won the title of the women’s lightweight (60kg) at the Ulaanbaatar 2019 ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships which was her next top international success. Thailand’s currently 19-year-old female boxer is our ASBC Hero from 2019 who achieved several other titles during her career.

Porntip Buapa was born in Udon Thani Province on 20th of January in 2001 and began boxing at the age of 14. She trains around 30 hours each week in Saraburi province together with the Thai national team and their experienced coaches. Her boxing idol is Sydney 2000 Olympic Games winner Wijan Ponlid as for many young Thai boxers.

Following her regional and national events, Buapa claimed bronze medal at the 2017 ASEAN Women’s Youth Boxing Championships in Saraburi which was her first international event. Buapa dominated the 2017 edition of the Thai Youth National Championships where she defeated three of her opponents by RSC.

Following those successes, Porntip Buapa was selected to represent Thailand at the Bangkok 2018 ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships. She eliminated China’s Cao Xueqing and Kazakhstan’s Mariya Gladkova during her road to the finals of the women’s lightweight (60kg) in Bangkok. The Thai talent faced in the final with South Korea’s new national team member is Jo Mi Hyun and began their contest with high number of clear punches. Buapa amazed the crowd with her tough performance and following her clear punches she won the title of the continental event.

Buapa reached the quarter-finals of the Budapest 2018 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships after two triumphs in the Hungarian capital. The Thai female talent was in even better form at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games where only Great Britain’s unbeaten star Caroline Dubois was able to stop her but she claimed silver medal.   

Buapa achieved bronze medals at the Golden Girl Women’s Box Cup in Sweden, at the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament in Hungary, opening the year of 2019. She claimed gold medal at the Andaman Youth Games in Phuket and arrived to the venue of the Ulaanbaatar ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships as titleholder. The 18-year-old Thai talent eliminated Mongolia’s Ganzorig Badmaarag in the semi-finals of the lightweight (60kg) in Ulaanbaatar with excellent performance. The Thai boxer overcame Kazakhstan’s Ulzhanay Mamutova in the attacks at the first round and she continued her technician performance until the end of the final round which meant Buapa delivered Thailand’s second gold medal in Ulaanbaatar.
