ASBC Heroes – India’s 16-year-old girl Tanishbir Kaur Sandhu who had only one loss in 2019

India’s Tanishbir Kaur Sandhu won the title of the light heavyweight (80kg) in the Fujairah 2019 ASBC Asian Women’s Junior Boxing Championships. The currently 16-year-old Indian boxer defeated all of her three rivals in Fujairah, UAE and she is our ASBC Hero from the continental events from 2019.

Tanishbir Kaur Sandhu was born in the city of Patiala on August 13 in 2004 and began boxing already in 2013 at the age of 9. Her nickname is Tanish who works with Mrs. Amanpreet Kaur and Anudeep in the Patiala Boxing Centre. The 171cm tall Sandhu has been training 28 hours in a week in Patiala with the team.

As many of the Indian woman boxers her boxing idol is six-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte who already qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Tanishbir Kaur Sandhu likes the Punjabi food and songs and her most influential person is her father who motivates the young girl to achieve her objectives.

Following her regional and national events, she competed at the Junior Women’s Cup in Serbia where she claimed silver medal at the light heavyweight (80kg) where only Russia’s experienced Maria Proskunova was able to stop her. That strong international junior event was her first ever competition out of India.

Tanishbir Kaur Sandhu had a tough competition at the 2019 edition of the Indian Junior National Championships where she had to begin her campaign against the top favourite of the weight class, Komal who won several international events. The younger girl from Patiala was able to defeat Komal in the quarter-finals and after that success Kritika Khoda and Tanisha Patel were easier opponents for Kaur Sandhu.

Her superb gold medal at the Indian Women’s Junior National Championships guaranteed for her a ticket to the Fujairah 2019 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships. Kaur Sandhu opened her road in the United Arab Emirates with Uzbekistan’s Sakhobat Khusanova who was competitive for the Indian but she was able to manage the fight. The final verdict was unanimous decision in the favour of Kaur Sandhu in the quarter-finals of the event.

The Indian talent spent less than one round in the ring against United Arab Emirates’ Maryam Al-Mesmari in the semi-finals and referee quickly stopped their fight. Kaur Sandhu’s final opponent was Chinese Taipei’s promising Lin Chien Yu who eliminated a tough Kazakh talent in the last four. Kaur Sandhu proved her best performance in the final and controlled all of the rounds against Lin managing her career highlight in Fujairah.
