Alvarez, Lagazo and Lofranco amazed in the Philippines Batang Pinoy National Championships

The Batang Pinoy National Championships is an important competition in the Philippines which supports to increase the experiences of their youngest hopes and find talents in the Southeast Asian country. Eighteen champions have been crowned in the Batang Pinoy National Championships in Puerto Princesa where Micoh Cholo Alvarez, Jay Larie Lagazo and Angelou Lofranco proved as future hopes of the country.
Philippines has been preparing to the Southeast Asian Games but the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) are also focusing to their next generation of boxers to prepare them to the next Olympic cycle.
Puerto Princesa hosted the new edition of the Batang Pinoy National Championships which was held in Puerto Princesa in the picturesque island of Palawan. The city hosted the 2017 edition of the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships with success and a well-known place in Philippines’ boxing life.
The Batang Pinoy National Championships had qualifying legs before the main competition in Visayas and in Mindanao to select the best ones. The schoolboys and junior boxers attended in the Batang Pinoy National Championships in Puerto Princesa. The event was not only a national event but a selection for the upcoming ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships.
The first female title of the whole Batang Pinoy National Championships was achieved by Lady Jane Payla of Cagayan de Oro at the girls’ pinweight (46kg) who has got strong family connections to our sport and defeated all of her three rivals including Vanesa Belarte of Bago City in the final.
Cebu’s Patricia Mae Sumalinog also won three contests to take the title of the girls’ light flyweight (48kg) beating Mary Car Vicente of Cagayan de Oro in the final. Alexa Tara De La Cruz survived her tough semi-final against Baguio’s Sarah Garwageo but after that success, she was more confident in the final and outpointed Joyline Saldo. Jean Antonette Aye (52kg), Liezel Chavez (54kg) and Palawan’s local hero Erla Mae Garcia (60kg) won their titles with motivated boxing.
Philippines’ best schoolboys arranged tough contests at the light mosquito weight (36kg) where Jolas Doringo had the strong stamina to beat his talented rivals. Clark Vicera subdued their rivals at the mosquito weight (38kg) of the schoolboy part of the Batang Pinoy National Championships winning all of his contests unanimously.
ASBC Asian Schoolboys Boxing Championships competitor Abing Van Hendriche was the main favourite of the schoolboys’ light paperweight (40kg) but he lost his semi-final to eventual winner Micoh Cholo Alvarez which was the main surprise of the Batang Pinoy National Championships. General Santos City’s Shane Francis Vicente (42kg) and his teammate Rainer John Antiporna won the further schoolboy titles in Puerto Princesa.
Cagayan de Oro’s Angelou Lofranco and his younger brother ASBC medallist Reymond are Philippines’ top talents for the future. Angelou proved his very best once again in the final of the junior pinweight (46kg) and captured his next national gold defeating Rene Boy Atam. General Santos City’s John Paul Napoles was the favourite of the junior light flyweight (48kg) but he suffered a loss to Bienjemar Codoy in the final.
John Wayne Vicera won one of the tightest finals in the national event but he was able to manage his success against Rhein John Gidor at the flyweight (50kg). Jay Larie Lagazo started his campaign with a KO success and continued his powerful performance until the very end of the national competition taking the title of the light bantamweight (52kg). Geovane Rosalina (54kg), Melbert Navarro (57kg) and Michael Potot (60kg) were the further junior winners in Puerto Princesa.
