Nepal, Sri Lanka and Iraq won contests in Dubai on Day2

Among the developing nations, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Iraq won contests in the second competition day at the IBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships in Dubai today.
The exciting money prize event, the IBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships concluded the busy first competition day in two sessions with 54 bouts.
Altogether 428 boxers are participating in the IBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships in Dubai for the 13 available gold medals.
Afghanistan, Bahrain, Cambodia, IBA-China, IBA-India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Palestine, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan are the 21 participating countries from the Asian continent.
Kyrgyzstan’s Anvarzhan Khodzhiyev won several international events in 2024, including the Strandja Memorial and the Duisenkul Shopokov Tournament as well. The 23-year-old boxer was in trouble in the first round against Zambia’s Nene Maonga but his corner switched his tactics in the break. The small Kyrgyz boxer used his brilliant footwork in the second and the third rounds and he turned back their minimumweight (48kg) fight.
Sri Lanka has also strong traditions at the minimumweight (48kg) from the past and their Layton Cup winner Danil Hasika Tissaaratchy was the next in action. His teammate, the 21-year-old Asian U22 silver medallist Yazmin Usaith won his opener on Day1, and Tissaaratchy delivered the next success for the Sri Lankans. He had a 4:1 split decision triumph over Kenya’s Sylus Oyugi Onyago in a hectic Round of 32 bout.
Nepal’s Lal Prasad Upreti is a technician boxer at the minimumweight (48kg) and he supported the country’s team in all of the important events in the recent years. After the first tactical round, he increased the tempo in the second against Ethiopia’s Abel Abatiye Alemu and he had a massive advantage on the judges’ scorecards. The Ethiopian was not able to change his style in the third round and Upreti marched to the last 16 with a clear unanimous success.
The Indians started the first day well enough with victories and their 20-year-old Devendra Singh Solanki delivered the next remarkable performance. The minimumweight (48kg) is always a top category in India and their new youngster controlled all of the three rounds well enough against Tanzania’s Ally Salim Ngwando.
Uzbekistan’s defending World Champion at the welterweight (67kg), the 24-year-old Asadkhudja Muydinkhujaev prepared well to this event to achieve his next top title. The Uzbek dominated the exchanges against Bahamas’ veteran Rashield Williams who returned to the events because of the Dubai competition. Muydinkhujaev was in different level in all aspects of boxing and he made a strong opener on the way to defend his throne.
Mongolia’s Jandos Askhar, who has strong Kazakh roots, made his debut in a top event at the 2019 Asian Youth Boxing Championships in Ulaanbaatar and he spent the last six years in competitions. The 23-year-old welterweight (67kg) boxer started well against South Africa’s teenager, Damesi Simamkele and he was able to keep his opponent on long in all of the three rounds successfully.
Kazakhstan’s Nurmagomed Yusupov started his country’s campaign with a KO on Day1 and their returning boxer to the national team, Sanatali Toltayev landed effective punches in closer distance against Zambia’s Gerald Kabinda. The 26-year-old Kazakh needed all of his 10 years of international experience to win their welterweight (67kg) preliminary bout.
Iraq’s Ridha Talib Jabbar competed in the level of the Asian Boxing Championships a few years ago and he was so motivated to participate in Dubai. The light heavyweight (80kg) boxer was better in the exchanges than Malaysia’s National Games silver medallist Muhammad Syahmi Bin Kauthar and he marched to the next stage.
Kyrgyzstan’s Asian medallist Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu is a strong attacking boxer who had the stronger punches than Greece’s former European Youth Champion Michail Tsamalidis at the light heavyweight (80kg) preliminary. His teammate, the Asian U22 Champion Myrzakir Koshaliyev is only 19-year-old but he had a clear success over India’s Bikramjeet Singh while Tajikistan’s tall Mukhammad Abroridinov was another strong super heavyweight (+92kg) winner on Day2.
