The Asian Boxing Family mourns Mr. Babar Ali Khan

The whole Asian Boxing Family mourns Pakistan’s former Asian Games silver medallist Mr. Babar Ali Khan who died at the age of 62 in the city of Lahore.

Mr. Babar Ali Khan was born on August 5 in 1963 and he started boxing as a child in his hometown. He competed first at the 1982 Asian Boxing Championships in Seoul but missed the flyweight (51kg) medal bout against Kuanmuang Klinchan of Thailand.

The young talent defeated Sri Lanka’s W.N. Chitrananda and Japan’s Kazuhiko Abe during his road to the final of the flyweight (51kg) in the 1982 Asian Games. He lost to Thailand’s Sangom O. Teeraporn in the final bout unanimously but he claimed a fantastic silver medal at the age of 19.

Khan eliminated Benin’s Firmin Abbisi but lost to Colombia’s Robinson Pitalua in the Round 16 of the bantamweight (54kg) at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics.

He represented Pakistan at the 1985 Asian Championships in Bangkok but he was knocked out by India’s Dhanu Pal Mathivanam in the quarter-finals of the lightweight (60kg).

Bangladesh hosted the 1985 South Asian Games in Dhaka where Babar Ali Khan not only joined the final of the lightweight (60kg) but he defeated India’s Dhanu Pal Mathivanam to take the gold medal of the multisport event. It was a classic revenge on their re-match due to his previous KO loss to the Indian boxer.

He competed also in the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul but Thailand’s Wangchai Pongsri stopped him in a close quarter-final bout. He participated also in the famous King’s Cup in Thailand and won several editions of the Pakistan National Championships.

The Asian Boxing Family will never forget his achievements as an international boxer.

May his soul will rest in eternal peace in Pakistan.
