The Asian Boxing Family mourns Mr. Mohammed Zahra

The Asian Boxing Family mourns Syria’s official and referee and judge Mr. Mohammed Zahra who passed away after an eight-months long illness.
Mr. Mohammed Zahra was born in Syria in 1949 and he began his sport career as a boxer in the 1960s. He competed in the 1974 Chemistry Cup in East Germany which was his main debut in the international stage of boxing.
He claimed a bronze medal at the middleweight (75kg) in the Mediterranean Games in Algiers after beating an Italian opponent in the quarter-finals. He lost in the last four but he achieved one of the four Syrian bronze medals in the Algerian capital.
He earned a bronze medal at the 1976 Golden Belt Tournament in Bucharest, Romania which was his preparation competition for the Arab Sports Games in that year.
The 1976 Arab Sports Games was held in Damascus, Syria and Zahra earned a well-deserved gold medal at the middleweight (75kg) on home soil.
Mr. Zahra competed in several other national, regional and international competitions during his career before he switched to coach and official.
He worked as a coach with the national team and also as Secretary General in the Syrian Boxing Federation in the past.
Mr. Zahra worked as Referee & Judge in several international competitions including in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games which was his highlight.
The Asian Boxing Family will never forget his achievements as a boxer, coach, referee & judge and official, serving our sport for decades.
May his soul will rest in eternal peace in Syria.
