Dasunika was named as the Best Female boxer at the 83rd Layton Cup

Sri Lanka hosted its 83rd edition of the Layton Cup which is another traditional elite competition in the South Asian country.

Sri Lanka hosted the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships in Colombo this May and their boxers earned record number of medals in the event.

After the T.B. Jayah Boxing Championships for the male junior boxers and the Anurudda Shanaka Bandara Trophy for the female junior talents, the 83rd Layton’s Cup was their next national activity.

The Layton Cup is a prestigious competition in Sri Lanka which is one of the pioneer nations in Asia with their events which mostly launched in the 1920s and 1930s.

Vidyarathna Sports Club’s R.A. Nadeeka Pushpakumari is a top national team member in Sri Lanka and she proved her power superiority against S.D.D. Silva at the women’s minimumweight (48kg) final. Pushpakumari controlled all of the three rounds and she won her next event after the National Championships and the Clifford Cup.

K.K. Ishara Thushari Perera represented Sri Lanka at the recent ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai on December 2024 and she used her longer reach against H.S. Priyadarshani in the second female final of the Layton’s Cup.

M.G.M.T. Dasunika moved down to the bantamweight (54kg) following her silver medal at the Clifford Cup and she not only stopped B.A. Nethmini but she received the Best Female Boxer Trophy of the competition.

Vidyarathna Sports Club’s Keshani Hansika is the most experienced Sri Lankan female boxer who returned to the squad after a short break in 2024. The Asian Games and Commonwealth Games competitor Hansika was too strong for P.H.I. Wirajini on their re-match at the featherweight (57kg) final and the referee confirmed her RSC success in the second round.

Air Force’s Muthuthanthri P.S. Sajeewani Cooray is a veteran 35-year-old boxer in the national team who moved up to the women’s lightweight (60kg) in the recent years. Cooray was too experienced and strong for her rivals in the Layton’s Cup and she stopped P.A.P.U. Athukorala in this final bout.
