Mr. Juan Fontanills is the new head coach of the Iranian national team

The Iranian Boxing Federation hired a new Cuban coach to manage the development of their elite national team as the head of the staff. Mr. Juan Fontanills is well-known in the Asian boxing market, he worked previously in Thailand and following his Mexican jobs, he approved the invitation of the Iranian Boxing Federation to be head coach.

The Cuban coach was welcomed by the President of the Iranian Boxing Federation Mr. Rohollah Hosseini and one of the Board members of the Federation Mr. Ahmad Mirzaei in the Tehran International Airport.

Mr. Juan Fontanills first arrived to Thailand in the beginning of the 1990s and he supported three Thai boxers to win Olympic gold medals: Somluck Kamsing (1996), Wijan Ponlid (2000) and Manus Boonjumnong (2004).

The Cuban coach returned to Thailand in 2018 to bring back the best era of the country and he supported the boxers to get a few quotas for Tokyo. He left Thailand during the Covid-19 period on April 2020 and worked in Mexico in the previous years.

Iran sent its team to the Asian Games in Hangzhou but the country was not able to win any medals in China. The Iranian Boxing Federation arranged its National Elite Championships in the beginning of the year which was their first selection for 2024.

Iran is planning to send its best male boxers to the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event to Italy and also a strong delegation to the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from May 23.
