Bandara, Faizal explode in Eindhoven opener

Sri Lanka’s Ishan Ranjeewa Seneviratne Bandara and Singapore’s Nur Sabrina Binte Mohamed Faizal started their respective campaigns in the Eindhoven Box Cup 2022 with a bang at the Hotel Eindhoven in the Netherlands over the weekend.

The 31-year-old Bandara, a bronze medalist in the Commonwealth Games 2018, unloaded a barrage of punches against England’s Thom Marley in the first round before coming through with an RSC victory in the succeeding canto of their men’s flyweight (51kg) bout.

On the other hand, Faizal overcame a slow start then rocked Canada’s Irene Fiolek with explosive head blows, prompting the ringside doctor to stop their women’s lightweight (60kg) tussle at the 2:30 mark of the second round.

Her teammate Rafhana Binte Rosli was not as fortunate as she got eliminated early following a 0-5 loss to the more experienced Rita Soares of Portugal in the women’s flyweight (52kg) division.

The Eindhoven Box Cup, which is the Netherland’s largest Olympic boxing event, drew a number of elite boxers from four confederations who are preparing for bigger competitions such as the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England next month. Boxing Association of Sri Lanka President Mr. Dian Gomes, who is also serving as board member in the International Boxing Association and council member in the Asian Boxing Confederation, travelled with the national team to check the performance of their pugs in Eindhoven prior to the Commonwealth Games.
