Thirteen Asian gold medals at the Strandja Memorial Tournament

Thirteen Asian boxers won their weight categories at the 75th edition of the Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria where 83 women and 178 men boxers competed for the 19 gold medals.

Algeria, Armenia, Austria, host Bulgaria, China, France, Georgia, Greece, Guatemala, India, Iran, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and Uzbekistan were the participating 28 countries in Sofia.

Uzbekistan’s Sabina Bobokulova delivered a fantastic surprise in the semi-finals of the women’s light flyweight (50kg) when she eliminated China’s Asian Games winner Wu Yu. The 20-year-old Uzbek met for the title India’s two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen and she made another fantastic performance. Bobokulova was patient and fast and those combinations were enough to beat the Indian star by 3:2 split decision.

Yang Wenlu, China’s best lightweight (60kg) boxer, was too experienced for Ukraine’s young Tetiana Dovhal in the final of the Strandja Memorial Tournament. China’s welterweight (66kg) World Champion Yang Liu had disadvantage in the final against India’s 21-year-old Arundhati Choudhary but she was able to turn back their final bout with an excellent last round.

Kyrgyzstan’s lone finalist, Anvarzhan Khodzhiyev not only joined to the title contest but he won that against India’s Barun Singh Shagolshem. The 21-year-old Kyrgyz developed well in the previous one year and his energetic shots decided their men’s minimumweight (48kg) final in Sofia.

India’s former Asian Games winner Amit Panghal returned in top shape to the national team and he had a fantastic and close flyweight (51kg) final against Kazakhstan’s World Champion, Sanzhar Tashkenbay. Another Indian male boxer, Sachin was slightly better in the exchanges than Uzbekistan’s Shakhzod Muzaffarov and he won the title of the men’s featherweight (57kg) in Sofia.

Uzbekistan’s World Champion Abdumalik Khalokov boxed at the lightweight (60kg) this time but his speed decided his final against Tajikistan’s Asror Vokhidov. Another experienced Uzbek, the 27-year-old Ikboljon Kholdarov made a fantastic comeback at the light middleweight (71kg) and he dominated his final over Algeria’s Mohamed Makhelouf.

The young Uzbeks such as Khujanazar Nortojiyev (54kg) and Javokhir Ummataliyev (75kg) both won their weight categories over Bulgarian opponents at the Strandja Memorial Tournament. Nortojiyev defeated the European Youth Champion Yasen Radev in a hectic final while the 18-year-old Ummataliyev triumphed over William Cholov.

Kazakhstan’s Dulat Bekbauov is their No.1 at the welterweight (67kg) and the World silver medallist had to do his very best to beat India’s Rajat in the final bout. Uzbekistan’s Youth World Champion future star, Jakhongir Zokirov walked over to the title of the super heavyweight (+92kg) following his KO in the semi-final.
