Dusmatov, Jalolov bag World Championships titles in front of home crowd

Olympic champions Hasanboy Dusmatov and Bakhodir Jalolov delighted the crowd at the Humo Arena after coming through with swift victories to claim gold medals in the first part of the finals of the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships 2023 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Saturday.

Uzbekistan’s trio, Hasanboy Dusmatov, Asadkhudja Muydinkhudjayev and Bakhodir Jalolov, furthermore Kazakhstan’s Sanzhar Tashkenbay earned four titles for Asia on Day12. The President of Uzbekistan Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev followed the finals and celebrated the local Uzbek heroes.

The finals at the minimumweight (48kg), flyweight (51kg), lightweight (60kg), welterweight (67kg), middleweight (75kg) and super heavyweight (+92kg) were on the schedule of the twelfth day of boxing in Tashkent.

Rio 2016 gold medalist and three-time ASBC Asian elite titlist Dusmatov landed a lethal combination to knock out France’s EUBC European champion Billal Bennama in the first round of their flyweight (51kg) final and claim his first-ever world title. Dusmatov landed a double combination in the end of the first round and Bennama not only went down to the floor but the referee confirmed the Uzbek boxer’s KO triumph.

For his part, Tokyo 2020 winner and three-time Asian Champion Bakhodir Jalolov reclaimed the world super heavyweight (+92kg) crown after taking an RSC win against Cuba’s young gun Fernando Alejandro Arzola.

Their teammate and former youth star Asadkhudja Muydinkhudjayev saved his best for last, pulling off a 5-0 upset over Kazakhstan’s Asian silver finisher Dulat Bekbauov in the welterweight (67kg) class. The 22-year-old Uzbek delivered his career’s best performance in this event and he was the smarter boxer in their meeting.

Kazakhstan’s Asian titleholder Sanzhar Tashkenbay proved too strong for Georgia’s European winner Sakhil Alakhverdovi as the Asian standout executed a 5-0 domination in the minimumweight (48kg) division.

France’s Sofiane Oumiha defended his lightweight (60kg) throne against Cuba’s Erislandy Alvarez Borges, 4-1, while Cuba’s Yoenlis Hernandez retained his middleweight (75kg) crown at the expense of Brazil’s Wanderley Pereira, 5-0.

The second part of the finals is scheduled on Sunday, May 14, with the bantamweight (54kg), featherweight (57kg), light welterweight (63.5kg), light middleweight (71kg), light heavyweight (80kg), cruiserweight (86kg), and heavyweight (92kg) titles at stake.
